Outside the country of his birth, he is known as one of China’s leading dissidents, winning awards and the attention of the world’s media. • But few people in China will have heard of him. Throughout his adult life he has repeatedly been put in prison and been under government surveillance. He is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for "subverting state power". Dissident – someone who challenges those who are in control. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
Why is he in prison? • In China the government try to control all information in the country. What you would claim as being ‘your right to know’ in Britain is perhaps not a right in China. • This means that if someone speaks out against the government then they can be arrested and even imprisoned. • Can you imagine not being able to criticise our government over issues such as Afghanistan and more recently student fees? • Many people argue that because China has such a huge population, it is right that the government control information such as Television and Newspapers. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
Liu Xiaobo was sent to prison after he helped write a manifesto, called Charter 08, calling for political reforms. • He wants China to be more democratic and to allow freedom of speech. Manifest – a document which sets out an individual or groups principles. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
So why is this important now? • Liu Xiaobo has been awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace prize. • The Nobel Peace Prize is an award given to someone who makes a contribution to world peace. • It is a famous award and previous winners include Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jnr and Mother Teresa. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
Liu Xiaobo is not being allowed to collect this award by the Chinese government and his family have been placed under house arrest so they cannot collect the award. • In addition, most people in China will not be aware of this award as the news authorities are not reporting it and all international news will blocked. House Arrest – not being allowed to leave your home or contact the outside world. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
Why is this relevant? • In the last few decades we have seen the rise of the Chinese economy and as a result their growing influence over world politics. • You can see the evidence in this school at the growing influence of China. • However, as we begin partnerships with China we see more and more areas of conflict due to our different look at Human Rights. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
Human Rights • In the west, we value freedom of speech through free press and the right to protest. Also through democracy the ordinary public has a huge influence over the actions of our government through fair and competitive voting. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
In China, the government have tighter control over the information that their people receive. • All national TV stations and newspapers are controlled by the government and their internet has huge restrictions over what people can find out. • Many Chinese people see the government as a ‘parental’ figure and have huge faith in their decisions, even if it means personal sacrifice. In China people do vote but they only really have one party who they can vote for – the Chinese Communist Party. Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
The impact of the award? • Many countries, who have strong economic links with China are boycotting this years awards ceremony such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Serbia, Iran, Vietnam, the Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Ukraine, and Cuba. • It is possible that they are not going because they believe that by awarding this to Liu Xiaobo, the west is meddling in Chinese affairs. • Countries which support this award claim that it shows that the Chinese government control the lives of the Chinese too much and deny their basis human rights. Boycotting – refusing to take part as a method of protest Mr Sheerin St Ninian’s H.S. - EDunbartonshire
