  1. SB Parent Program Survey Summaries/Program Design and Outcomes Presented to: Science Bound Advisory Board By: George Okantey, Parent Program Coordinator November 11, 2003

  2. What Are Your Expectations For Your Child? • To gain knowledge of science / math. I believe it will enhance our knowledge of the future and how they work together in our society. • I expect him to learn from challenges, never give up and use any stumbling blocks as stepping stones to success. • To complete the Science Bound program and go on to Purdue for 4 years. Be able to understand the value of opportunities given by this program

  3. What Are Your Expectations For The Science Bound Program? • To encourage my child to think. To expose him to opportunities that he otherwise might never have. To encourage him to do the things they will need to do to attend college. • To assist my child in areas I'm unable to or help her to expand her knowledge. • To provide my child with the skills needed to become successful in the area of science. To challenge my child.

  4. What Suggestions Do You Have To Improve Science Bound. • Students visit places of employment that would be linked to science, mathematic, engineering and technology. • I would appreciate a list of contacts for the program. I have concerns. • Have long sessions, take students out of their comfort zones. • Bring more speakers for motivation.

Suggested Improvements…cont. • I feel that the parents and the professors should meet and keep in touch to make sure the child is doing well and receiving the type of help that is required. • To help my child keep good grades. It would be good if there was someone to call if I did not know the answers with school work.

  6. As A Parent, Please Describe Your Biggest Concerns. • Concerned that I will not be able to be a help to him since I am not proficient in sciences/technology . • My concern is that I may not be able to provide the necessary tools for my son.

Concerns…cont. • My concern is peer pressure, now that he is reaching the teenage life. • Will my child remain interested and excited about the program? • That this program may cease because of lack of scholarship money • A future selection criteria that may eliminate poor families who need help

  8. What Activities Or Learning Experiences Do You Think Should Be Considered For The Design Of The Science Bound Parents Support Program? • Sample insights into exactly what they are learning and experiencing then together as parents with our child we can better discuss, understand and decide his career.

  9. Learning experiences…cont. • Assigning new participants with current or veteran participants for a certain time frame. • More networking and social activities and community activities. • Basic science and math skills for undereducated parents "refreshers" in physics & chemistry basics.

Learning experiences…cont. • How to help your child balance activities/determine priorities and how to help you child when you are not "into" science/technology. • Low or No cost classes for parents who want to further their education. • Have classes for parents so we understand what the kids are doing.

  11. Learning experiences…cont. • To keep parents updated on the program and make sure they have a good understanding of the program. Also what classes to take when attending high school.

  12. Educational Goals That You Might Want To Achieve Or Would Be Interested In Exploring. • Gain college credits 39 • Increase technology knowledge 41 • Achieve GED 8 • Increase science knowledge 33 • No assistance desired 9 Goals Number

  13. Program Framework • Extension Parenting Education Model • Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets • The 5 Principles of America’s Promise-Alliance for Youth • Meet on first Tuesday of each month • Parent advisory council

Design/Implementation • Effective parenting skills • Personality assessment/style • Parent teacher interaction • Educational option plan • Technology training • Managing family resources • Nutrition and wellness • Gardening and beautification • Field trips • Volunteer/Community service opportunities

  15. Outcomes • Achieve 60 percent involvement in Science Bound activities • Parents will connect and communicate with mentor teachers about student academic progress on a regular basis • Parents will be involved in their own learning to reinforce to their children that achievement matters

  16. So What? • Parents will develop positive attitudes towards science and math by understanding how they open doors to future careers for their children • 30 percent of parents will complete their GED or further their education in a local State college • Parents will gain confidence to seek other community resources that help them and their children to grow and excel • Enhanced parenting skills through effective social networks
