Agenda • Process writing • Peer Review • Netiquette
Peer Review • What is it? • Why do it? • Why should I have you review each other’s papers instead of just reviewing them myself? • What are some of the issues that we face with having you give your classmates feedback? • How can you be an effective reviewer? • What types of things should you look for when reviewing?
Netiquette • What is netiquette? • Where does it apply? • What are the common mistakes that students may make while emailing their professors.
Activity • Write an email to your academic adviser asking for a letter of recommendation in order to support your application for a grant/award. This grant will be used in order to cover your expenses for a conference presentation. (Take 5 minutes) • Put it aside when you are done, we’ll come back to it.

Hi Bal, Please find the attachment. No attachment attached.
Netiquette • Be careful when you select reply. • Write an appropriate subject line. Don’t reply to the same subject if your email has a new content. • Think about tone and politeness. • Give sufficient details, but don’t write unnecessary information. Your teacher does not remember everybody’s name in the class. • Don’t forget attachments, if any. • Emailing a professor or teacher: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/694/01/ • Requests should be softened by using modal verbs. • Take note of power differentials.
Go back to your email draft and see if you want to make any changes or want to reconsider anything.
Homework • Writing Workshop 1 Revisions • Read assigned pages from Unit 1 of textbook • Look at course website for specifics on what tasks you will be assigned.
