  1. Starter Activity Look at the four questions. In your pairs, decide which answer is correct. You must give a reason for your answer.

  2. Starter Activity – Think / Pair / Share 6 + 7 x 2 = 2 x 6 + 10 ÷ 2 = 35 – 20 ÷ 5 + 6 = 24 + 8 ÷ 4 + 7 = 20 or 26? 11 or 17? 37 or 9? 33 or 15

  3. BIDMAS – A quick Reminder B I D M A S RACKETS NDICES ULTIPLICATION IVISION UBTRACTION DDITION

  4. Mini Whiteboard Activity You are going to be asked 10 questions. You must keep a record of each answer as you need to add all 10 answers together at the end of the activity

  5. Someone in Springfield has robbed Kwik – e- mart? Can you help Chief Clancy Wiggum work out who?

  6. You will have only 15 seconds to solve each clue…………..

  7. Solve 3 + 4 x10

  8. Solve (3 + 4) x 10

  9. Solve: 5 +2 x 3 + 1

  10. Solve: (5 +2) x 3 + 1

  11. Solve: (5 +2) x (3 + 1)

  12. Solve: 5 +2 x (3 + 1)

  13. Solve: 6 + 9 ÷ 3

  14. Solve: (6 + 9) ÷ 3

  15. Solve: 12 – 3 + 25

  16. Solve: 4 +{(7 - 4) x 2} 2

  17. Now add up all the answers to identify the thief from the following gallery…..

  18. Krusty Patty Ned Flanders Grandpa 478 219 89 170 Smithers Side Show Bob Homer Simpson Dr. Hibbert 134 209 184 276

  19. Did you correctly identify the robber?

  20. Solutions 3 + 4 x10 = 43 (3 + 4) x 10 = 70 5+2x3+1 = 12 (5+2)x3+1 = 22 (5+2)x(3+1) = 28 5 + 2 x (3 + 1)= 13 6 + 9 ÷ 3 = 9 (6 + 9) ÷ 3 = 5 12 -3 + 52 = 34 22 +62 = 40 Total of all solutions: 276

  21. Support - Task • Decide whether each of the statements below is true or false. If you think the statement is false you must say what you think the correct answer is. • 2 + 3 x 5 = 25 • 4 x 5 + 2 = 22 • 15 – 2 x 6 = 3 • 3 + 4 x 2 = 14 • 20 – 10 ÷ 2 = 15 • 8 ÷ 2 + 3 = 7 • 6 - 1 + 3 = 2

  22. Main Task Show how you can reach each target by adding brackets to the calculations.

  23. Extension Task Look at the diagrams opposite and the calculations and solutions. on the next page. Underneath each diagram write the calculation / calculations that it represents. You should also write the solution. Some of the solutions are missing, you must work these out.

  24. Plenary The answer is 8, what is the question? Easier Challenge Include + and – in your calculation. Harder Challenge Include x, ÷ and brackets in your calculation. Hardest Challenge Include x, ÷ , brackets and indices in your calculation.
