  1. What’s New: Outline Five MODLAND babies in 2000, more on the way… MODLAND Validation Update for Terra and Aqua (on-line) Jaime Nickeson: additional support for Validation Core Site ftp directories: MODIS subsets, ETM+, ASTER "MODIS Tool" MELite portable Mercury metadata editor Mercury spatial & temporal search ORNL "Best Practices" guide document Airborne/Tasking plans: ER-2 deployment, MQUALS 2001 flight plan, Ikonos tasking

  2. Airborne/Tasking plans: ER-2 deployment, IKONOS tasking for Springs needs to be tasked in February Airborne plans should be shared during breakout in order to maximize multiple use.

  3. Airborne/Tasking plans: MQUALS 2001 flight plan, Likely targets: SALSA- Walnut Gulch flight in January with Rachel Pinker JORNEX dry and wet seasons with USDA-ARS Harvard Forest Konza Possible targets: LBA (one or two sites) Mondalbobi, Mongolia

  4. Airborne/IKONOSTasking plans Need to submit early growing season requests in early February May want to specify viewing geometry in tasking request Will explore coordination with Stennis validation efforts All data from 2000 available to any NASA funded investigator ER-2 Airborne plans should be shared during breakout in order to maximize multiple use.

  16. Objective http://daac.ornl.gov/eos_land_val/valid.html

  17. Overview • Validation data available from ORNL DAAC • Gap-filled flux data compiled for 11 core sites • Real-time Validation Exercise underway • Site ancillary data available for core sites • MODIS products to be posted (proposed) • > 80 Land Validation data sets registered in Mercury • Mercury and ORNL Metadata Editor available, enhancements planned

  18. Validation Activities ORNL DAAC EDC DAAC MODIS Land Validation FLUXNET Web Page Validation Web Page DAAC Archive Mercury Links to site info, imagery, EDC, CRESS Validation Data Sets Registered in Mercury Modelers Real-Time Validation Exercise FLUXNET Gap-filled NEE, LE, others Imagery ETM GLCTS 11x11 cutouts 200X200 cutouts Individual Site Data MODIS products (MODAPS)

  19. Registered Data in Mercury • 27 BigFoot - Tom Gower, Dave Turner • 8 Wisc. Study - Tom Gower, Sean Burrows • 4 KonVEx - Dave Meyer, Jeff Morisette, Carol Bruegge • 1 FLUXNET - Dick Olson, Dennis Baldocchi • 1 SAVE - Jeff Privette • 13 Surface Radiation, Saudi Aradia - Darryl Myers • 2 LAI - Ranga Myneni • 8 ETM Imagery, MQUALS - Jeff Morisette • 3 SALSA/Maricopa - Susan Moran • 1 CD - Mandalgobi, Mongolia - Dr Honda • 11 ORNL DAAC validation-related data sets • 81 data sets entered by 16 PI’s (64 have User Ids)

  20. Mercury Searching 1. Fielded Search (using picklists for Project, Site PI, Parameter, etc.) 2. Spatial Search (use cursor to define area of interest) or enter specific coordinates 3. Temporal Search

  21. 2. Select Site 3. Select Sensor Web Browse Tree Search provides organized “pick lists” for predefined hierarchies of metadata, e.g., parameters within sensors within sites 1. Select order in which to retrieve available data set listings 4. Select Parameter to bring up metadata for data sets

  22. MELite for Mercury • ORNL Metadata Editor (OME) • on-line editor that produces formatted files containing metadata for Mercury • Metadata Editor Lite (MELite) • standalone (PC platforms) editor that produces files to be uploaded to the on-line OME • developed by S2K Project (Dozie Ezigbalike), available for download from the S2K Web site

  23. ORNL Metadata Editor (OME) Screen Picklist for Site

  24. Typical MELite Input Screens - Parameters Page orientation Smart Picklists

  25. Data Concerns • Availability: not all validation data are being registered in Mercury • even with NASA “6-month” Data Policy • investigators may be performing validation without registering data in Mercury for sharing • encouragement from NASA Program Managers • promote Mercury with metadata entry tools • provide Mercury status reporting tools • Documentation: different formats, file organization, units of measure • distribute “Best Practices”

  26. Posting MODIS Products • UMt group is extracting 11x11 km cutouts for MODIS products for core and flux sites • .hdf format, integerized-sinusoidal projection • LC/LCC (MOD_12), VI (MOD13), fPAR/LAI (Mod-15), GPP (MOD-17), others? • 8-day composites • ORNL proposes to post cutouts • re-project to appropriate projection (UTM) to relate to field work with desired positional accuracy • re-format into an ASCII table • need agreement on common projection and process

  27. Re-projecting MODIS Data Wisconsin Park Falls Site MODIS sinusoidal UTM Geog.

  28. Best Practices for Preparing Ecological and Ground-Based Data Sets to Share and Archive • Prepared by ORNL (Cook et al.) • Best Practices include: 1. Assign Descriptive File Names 2. Use Consistent and Stable File Formats 3. Define the Parameters 4. Use Consistent Data Organization 5. Perform Basic Quality Assurance 6. Assign Descriptive Data Set Titles 7. Provide Documentation • Provided this document to SAFARI 2000, EOS Land Validation, BigFoot, and LBA projects • Available on-line, in booklets, Ecol. Bull. (in press) (http://www.daac.ornl.gov/DAAC/PI/bestprac.html)

  29. How can we best support validation? • What are the biggest obstacles for EOS validation, what can be done to help? • Should the DAAC post a selected set of 8-d MODIS products for the 11x11 cutouts for core sites? • Do links to imagery at EDC that are in the Land Validation Web site need to go into Mercury? • Would MELite for Mercury be used by field investigators?
