Marques de Rubi Report • An inspection ordered by Spain in 1766 • Marques de Rubi did an inspection report on the region’s presidios • Traveled for 2 years and covered 7,000 miles
Upon doing this inspection he concluded: - Spain did not have the power, wealth, and people necessary to run these missions - He urged Spain to pull back from the “real frontier”
What was in his report? • It had 4 parts • He wrote it as a recommendation for Texas
The Marques de Rubi Report • 1. Spain should abandon all missions and presidios except those at La Bahia and San Antonio. • 2. San Antonio should then replace Los Adaes as the capital of Texas.
Marques de Rubi Report • 3. The Spanish population in East Texas should be moved to San Antonio to strengthen the defenses of the settlement and missions there. • 4. The Spanish should befriend the Comanche and use their help in fighting the Apache. • This report led to changes in Texas policies.
Changes in Texas Policies • Settlers were removed from their homes and put on a 3 month trek to San Antonio. Many died along the way. • Once in San Antonio much of the good farm land was taken, the settlers became unhappy and homesick.
Changes in Texas Policy • The settlers were allowed to return back east but not past the Trinity River • A new settlement named Bucareli did well at first, but Comanche raids, disease, and flooding became serious issues. • Nacogdoches was found on the site of an old mission. The Tejas were friendly to the Spanish.
