Copernicus Space Component Data Access for Africa

This article provides an overview of the Sentinel missions, their operational status, and data access methods, specifically focusing on data access for Africa. It highlights the free access to Sentinel products provided by ESA, the various methods of data retrieval, and the importance of network connectivity and bandwidth. The article also discusses the potential synergies with programs addressing the Digital Divide and the role of regional mirror sites in enhancing data access. Furthermore, it mentions the availability of the ESA Data Hub software and the support provided by ESA in deploying regional mirror sites. 3. Sentinels – Operations Status • Sentinel-1A is operational, with products accessible to all users • Sentinel 1B launched successfully on 25 April 2016 • Sentinel-2A is operational, with products accessible to all users since December 2015 • Reprocessing of data acquired during commissioning phase (summer 2015) is ongoing • Sentinel-3A was launched on 16 February 2016 and is under commissioning • Products opening to all users currently foreseen in summer 2016 • Sentinel-5 Precursor planned for launch by end 2016 • It will be the first Copernicus mission dedicated to atmosphere monitoring

  4. Sentinel Data Access • ESA offers free access to any user to all Sentinel products: most recent data as well as complete long term archive • Any user can self-register at sentinels.copernicus.eu • ESA delivers products in Near Real Time (3 hours from sensing) as well as Non Time Critical (24 hours from sensing) ESA Data Hub provides an OPEN SOURCE Web interface Users can set own scripts to automatically retrieve, filter and download products

  5. Published Products Global Statistics • All Sentinel products can be accessed online by any users for download via terrestrial network Sentinel-2: April 2016 10% cloud coverage

  6. Sentinel Data Downloads – Global View • More than 30,000 registered users worldwide • The number of registered user in Africa has doubled between December 2015 and March 2016 * it includes the Asian part of Egypt ** it includes the European part of Russia and Turkey

  7. Sentinel Data Access in Africa • Sentinel products download is the standard data access method • ESA data access provides open source functions allowing users to automatically search, select and download relevant products via scripts • Network connectivity and bandwidth are crucial factors • ESA data access includes 10Gbps connection to academic network (GEANT) • Synergies can also be sought with programmes addressing the Digital Divide • In the frame of the TIGER initiative, Sentinel-2 data have been distributed by ESA to users on media • ESA can support this delivery method in case of need • Regional mirror sites can improve local connectivity and act asSentinel products re-distribution hubs • ESA can provide technical support to deploy local data hubs

  8. Conclusions • ESA provides free open access to all Sentinel products • ESA Data Hub software is available as open source for re-use • ESA can support deployment of regional Sentinel mirror sites • Mirror sites can act as re-distribution points to enhance Sentinel data access by regional communities • For further questions or expression of interest please contact us: • Pier.Bargellini@esa.int • Lena.Stern@esa.int
