OPEN HOUSE 2019 VISUAL ART DEPARTMENT
Mission of Visual Arts • Our goal, as the Argyle Visual Arts Department, is to promote, inspire, and facilitate visual literacy as relevant to the creative demands of the 21st century. We believe that creative problem solving and self-expression are vital components in developing the “whole” mind, and that fostering appreciation for and experience in the creative process directly influences levels of success across the curriculum and on into life beyond school. It is our mission, therefore, to provide students at each grade level with the opportunity to encounter similar, but increasingly complex concepts and techniques that will broaden their skill sets while nurturing a passion for invention.
Visual Art Classes • These courses are production courses. The time in the studio is important to practice and develop their creative skills. • Projects and sketchbook work are to introduce students to techniques, media, art styles, should show progress as time goes by. • If a student misses a class or is behind, they should plan to attend “tutorials” to regain the time missed.
Expectations • Classroom Rules • Be Polite (Respect yourself, others and the school) • Be Punctual • Be Prepared (have what you need when you need it) • We will put our phones in the phone caddy when we enter the room. When class is over and materials cleaned, we may retrieve our phone.
Homework • Yes, you get better at something if you practice regularly. • Sketchbook Assignments: List may be found on website and Google Classroom. • Students were given a hard copy of the sketchbook prompts for the year with due dates and the rubric used for scoring. • Again, they may be found on Google Classroom. • Class calendars may be accessed through Classroom or webpage. Due dates are on the calendars.
Google Classroom for art • Stream: for announcements, reminders, notes and contest information • Classwork: Where assignments, projects and sketchbook prompts can be found. • Students do not need to post their work to Classroom for Art. • This is used for information retrieval and due dates.
Tutorials (open studio) • 7:30-8:20 AM Open daily • Mega Lunch “tutorials” Mondays and Thursdays during B Lunch • If student is absent or behind, this is when they should be to make up the work time they missed. *After school on Mondays and Thursdays or make prior arrangements with me for other days.
Grades • 50% Major: Projects • 50% Minor: Classwork, participation, homework, sketchbook assignments, etc. • We will discuss artworks through various types of critique formats, project rubrics, and self reflection. • We are looking for growth in technical skill and creative thinking.
