Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) vs Emergency Release of Blood Products at GW
Similarities between MTP and emergency release • Both are orders for the blood bank to immediately release blood products • A type/screen or type/cross is NOT needed to release blood products • A type/cross specimen should be sent ASAP so specific products can be dispensed • We have run out of type O blood in the past when a type/cross was never sent • Both are orders to dispense products. A separate order is needed to actually transfuse the products
Differences between MTP and emergency release • MTP: • Products to be dispensed are FIXED • You CANNOT change the order or customize it • You only have to sign the form and send it to the blood bank • CALL the blood bank to let them know MTP is being activated • CALL the blood bank to de-activate MTP so they stop preparing products (and wasting what you don’t use)
Differences between MTP and emergency release • Emergency Release • Need to specify which products you want and how much
MTP and Emergency Release • Basically: if you want a lot of RBC and FFP in a near 1:1 ratio, order MTP • If you want to customize your transfusion regimen, use emergency release
