  1. THT282, Case: C3 Case C3.Water stress in Rural Nepal- A case study of Manung VDCManoj K. Pandey To be Uploaded in the Hand in Folder by October 5

  2. THT282, Case: C3 Your task Suggest management strategies of the water resources so as to improve the livelihood in Manung.

  3. THT282, Case: C3 Background • Manung is a small village in Tanahun district of Nepal • More than 35 districts out of 75 districts of Nepal have been facing water related stresses. • Map of Nepal Tanahu district Bordering North -China Bordering South , east and west -India

  4. THT282, Case: C3 Background • More than 90% of the people living in Manung VDC practice subsistence agriculture for their livelihood. They raise livestock as a way to enhance their economic status. Almost every house among more than 200 households in the area of the VDC has livestock that demand a large amount of water. • They plant crops only once a year due to lack of water for irrigation of their fields.

  5. THT282, Case: C3 Sourcesof Water Resources in Manung VDC The major and the only sources of water in Manung VDC are; • Rainwater • A stream at lower elevation than the village • Natural springs at some localities, • Small ponds for livestock fed by rainwater (a traditional model of rainwater harvesting)

  6. THT282, Case: C3 The water stresses in the Manung VDC could be summarized as follows: • Too little water for 8 months of the year. • Too much water in the four months of the monsoon season. The rainwater erodes the steep slopes carrying away valuable nutrients and soil. • Lack of water management institutions or bodies. • Lack of awareness and supporting NGOs. • Inefficient use of water when available.

  7. THT282, Case: C3 Hints to the group work • Check your understanding of the scenario by discussing it within your group. Make a list in which you write down everything you know about this situation (do not forget the cross cutting issues). Begin with the information contained in the case description. Add knowledge that group members bring. • A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences you should be able to describe what your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. • Prepare a list of questions you think need to be answered to solve the problem. Record them under a list titled: "What do we need to know?”- Just as an example -e.g.-What could be the potential water sources? What would be the minimum water demands for various purposes in rural areas? How to meet both domestic and irrigation demand? Should water management be seen in isolation or as part of integrated watershed management? Are there any cross cutting issues that needs to be addressed? Who manages the water supply system of the community? local administrative authority? households ? etc. • List recommendations and solutions under the heading: "What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., questions to an expert, questions to teachers (of THT282), get on-line data, visit the library. • Present findings. Prepare a small report as a ppt presentation in which you make recommendations, predictions, inferences, or other aspects appropriate to solution of the problem that are based on your data and background. Be prepared to present and support your recommendation in class. Make a short presentation (10min) of your suggested solution. Your task is to suggest the management strategies of water resources so as to improve the livelihood in Manung.
