Jan van Eyck’s Life • He was born in around 1390 in Massiek, Belgium. • Nobody really knows the exactly when or where he was born. • People today believe Jan had brothers named Hubert and Lambert van Eyck because they came from the same town. Hubert is also a painter. • Jan married Margaret around 1432. They had two children. • Jan died in 1441.
Jan and Hubert van Eyck’s Painting • Hubert taught Jan to draw, paint and master colors. • The Ghent Altarpiece is a large painting inside a chapel that was started by Hubert in 1420 and completed by Jan in 1432.
Jan van Eyck’s Employment • Before 1421, Jan mostly worked with his brother Hubert. • In 1422 and 1424, Jan worked as a court painter for John of Bavaria, the count of Hainaut-Holland. Most Famous Work • Jan’s most famous painting is the The Arnolfini Portrait. • The painting depicts the Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife, in their home in the Flemish city of Bruges. • The painting is famous because it is considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art at that time.
The Arnolfini Portrait • The Arnolfini Portrait was painted using oil instead of tempera. • Oil paint is slow-drying and it can be shiny. This allows the painter to have more time to add more details to the painting. • The painting is very realistic like a picture. There are lots of details about the people and also the room.
Jan van Eyck’s Painting Style • Van Eyck was very interested in the effects of light in his paintings. • Using oil allowed Jan to paint objects that shows reflection. The brass chandelier in the Arnolfini portrait shows this.
Jan van Eyck’s Painting Style • Van Eyck shows extreme detail in paintings. • In the Arnolfini painting, the mirror in the background shows the reflection of the couple and their guests. • The mirror frame has round symbols showing Jesus. • Over the mirror, Jan signed the painting and dated it 1434. Painters at this time did not do this.
