Background Information • He was born in the Netherlands. • He started painting in Bruges. • Has a brother, Hubert Van Eyck, who was also a famous painter. • He was started painting for a job called court painter for Duke Phillip.
Interesting Facts • Jan Van Eyck was considered one of the best European painters of the 15th century. • He and his brother, Hubert Van Eyck did some of their paintings together. • He completed 15 paintings in only 61 years.
Oil Painting Misconception • Lots of people give credit to Jan van Eyck for inventing the oil painting technique, however Jan van Eyck didn’t actually invent the oil painting technique. • He only made changes to the technique which made it more creative, perfected, and effective. • He was often referred to as the “Father of oil painting.”
Other Facts • His job paid well. • While he was Court painter for Duke Phillip, he did secret missions for the duke. One of these missions included a trip to Portugal in which Jan van Eyck had a negotiation that resulted in the marriage of Duke Phillip and Isabelle of Portugal.
Self Portrait This is possibly a self portrait of Jan van Eyck, Historians aren’t 100% sure.
Most Famous Painting This is probably his most famous painting. It is a painting of Giovanni Arnolfini and his bride.
