  3. First of all, a Résumé…. This is a summary of one’s personal, academic and professional qualifications and experience to be presented when applying for a job. There are many types of résumés.

  4. The five main parts of a résumé are: 1. The heading or contact information 2. Objective 3. Education 4. Work experience 5. Skills

  5. Other possible parts of a résumé are: 1. Major or related courses taken (that are related to the job you are applying for.) 2. Extracurricular activities 3. Special achievements 4. References

  7. Possible objectives OBJECTIVE: To obtain a position as camp counselor in order to work with children. To develop my skills in computers while contributing to the goals of a major company. To make money for the holidays. To have something to do during summer.

  8. Education Begin with your most recent educational experience and work backwards. (Do not include elementary school.) Example: August 2010 to present: Central High School Santurce, PR Include GPA (unless it’s a “C” or lower).

  9. Work Experience Many seniors do not have any formal job experience. Therefore, in this section include any type of volunteer or paid jobs you have done. Later, you will eliminate volunteer jobs from this section. Begin with your current or most recent job and work backwards.

  10. Work experience (cont.) Examples: Babysitting Volunteer work at an animal shelter Washing cars every Saturday during summer Tutoring children in math and science December 2012 Cashier Burger King 65th Inf. Rd. Rio Piedras, PR

  11. Skills • Everything the individual is good at, especially those that are related to the job you are applying for. • Sports • Arts • Languages • Writing • Computer programs, technology. • Leadership skills, etc.

  12. Tips for writing a résumé • Be brief and to the point. For most seniors, 1 – 1½ pages are sufficient. • Proofread very carefully for spelling and grammar. Have a second person proofread. (Errors may be interpreted as carelessness.) • If you include references, speak to the persons first. Otherwise, write “References are available on request.” • Maintain a serious, professional tone. Avoid silliness or jokes.

  14. Cover Letter • The cover letter is used to introduce yourself and to try to make an employer interested. • It has an introduction, that is supposed to grab or “hook” the attention of the reader. • It needs to state the purpose and motivation of the applicant for the job. • It also exposes specific characteristics that the applicant wants to present.

  16. How to write a cover letter. • Include a heading centered at the top of the letter. (It can be the same as the contact information on the résumé.) • Inside address of the possible employer or the newspaper that published the ad. • Salutation with a colon at the end. Example: Dear Mrs. Torres: • First paragraph: Introduce yourself and how you found out about the job. • Second paragraph: State your qualifications and refer the reader to your résumé. • Thirdparagraph: Express yourwillingnessto come foran interview • Closing: Example: Sincerelyyours, Cordially, • Typeyourname and signaboveit.
