Objectives • Be familiar with the common types of physical disability and their characteristics • Be aware of the strengths and limitations of children and youth with physical disability • Build up effective helping skills and supportive attitude • Be capable of addressing their special needs in planning activities
Common types of physical disabilities Cerebral Palsy (腦性麻痺/痙攣) Muscule disease e.g.Muscular Dystrophy (肌肉營養不良/肌肉萎縮) Spinal cord injury(脊柱受損) Brain injury (腦受損) Spina Bifida(脊柱裂) Brittle Bone(脆骨症) Congenital abnormalities Other medical conditions e.g.burns, transverse myelitis
Major physical impairments (肌能失調) • Muscle tone disorder(肌肉張力失調) • Motor co-ordination disorder(肌能控制失調) • Muscle weakness (肌力衰退) • Joint contracture and deformity (關節僵硬/變形) • Skeletal malformation(骨骼發育不全)
Associated impairments • Visual impairment • Hearing impairment • Cognitive impairment • Oral motor dysfunction - Speech impairment - drooling • Incontinence
Poor walking stability • Use of wheelchairs / walking aids
Poor sitting balance and posture • Use of special seating

Ask before you help • Wait and listen • Don’t rush. Be patient • Helpful but not over-protective • Respect
Make use of the environment Examples: • toilet rail • furniture
Aware of your own body posture e.g. back protection • Aware of your own physical limitation • Ask for assistance whenever necessary • Apply energy conservation techniques – plan ahead

Tips in planning activities for someone with physical disability
Consider the suitability of the environment where the activity will take place • Access facilities • Space • Toilet facilities
Consider the nature of activities • Analyze the tasks – what physical skills are required? Can they manage? • Tasks should not be too physically demanding • Encourage physical participation • Try to provide multi-sensory inputs in activities
