  3. Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 Suggests that Paul and Titus had been involved in a joint ministry on the island. Paul left Titus behind (3:12) to complete the “organization” of the churches. • Complete what is lacking (ta. lei,ponta; literally “the things which are lacking”). See also call of Titus to “diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. (3:13). • Note the bracketing effect (inclusio): • Nothing lacking in the churches (1:5) • Nothing lacking in the leaders (3:13)

  4. Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 Is this to be understood as two separate tasks? • Complete the unfinished • Appoint elders • Or are they two sides of the same coin? • Complete what is unfinished BY appointing elders?

Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 note the closing phrase in the book's purpose statement, “as I directed you.” • Paul is reminding Titus that these instructions were previously given to him • They also (if not more so) confirm to the Cretan churches that Titus’ work is supported by Paul’s apostolic authority.

Titus • Now a quite similar passage to 1 Tim 3:1ff. • Yet, note subtle differences • Only elders, no deacons mentioned • “Not recent convert” eliminated • Suggests two points: • Local situation dictates church order, not prescribed and fixed structure. • Care must be taken to fully synthesize contents of all Pastorals into a composite whole. Appears as if Paul did not sit down with an explicit plan for its pattern of thought • Would it be fair to say that the letter was a bit more spontaneous? • His style in each chapter of Titus is repetitive • He introduces his idea • He give instructions, • He offers a basis of them in a doctrinal statement • He recapitulates or summarizes his thoughts

  16. Titus’ Structure Observations 2. The need in the church is for sound doctrine • Sound doctrine points toward ethical behavior (godliness) • Behavior spring from sound teaching. 3. Paul does not enter into controversy or debate with the heresy • Sound doctrine is voiced, heresy is almost ignored

Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • But Paul calls Titus not just to teach “sound doctrine…but also the things which are fitting…” • Connection between doctrine and ethics; creed and conduct; belief and practice • Young women…2:5 “that the word of God may not be dishonored.” • Slaves…2:10 “so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” • This means that its vital that our behavior fits our doctrine. Else we will dishonor the teaching.

Titus Study: • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Lesson 1: We are to be teachers of both doctrine and ethics • The sound doctrine • The things which are fitting • Lesson 2: We are to teach them in relation to each other. • Doctrine without ethics is empty and hollow • Ethics without doctrine is baseless • Lesson 3: We are to relate doctrine to ethics not only in general principles but in detailed applications • Rest of chapter is just this! • Or what about Holiness – Entire Sanctification.
