  2. Titus For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order what remains, and appoint elders in every city as I directed you Purpose 1:5 Appoint Leaders Teach Sound Doctrine Closing Greeting/Opening Complete the Task 1:1-4 1:5 1:6 1:16 2:1 3:11 3:12-15

  3. Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 Suggests that Paul and Titus had been involved in a joint ministry on the island. Paul left Titus behind (3:12) to complete the “organization” of the churches. • Complete what is lacking (ta. lei, ponta; literally “the things which are lacking”). See also call of Titus to “diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. (3:13). • Note the bracketing effect (inclusio): • Nothing lacking in the churches (1:5) • Nothing lacking in the leaders (3:13)

  4. Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 Is this to be understood as two separate tasks? • Complete the unfinished • Appoint elders • Or are they two sides of the same coin? • Complete what is unfinished BY appointing elders?

  5. Titus: Purposes • Explicit: • 1:5 note the closing phrase in the book's purpose statement, “as I directed you.” • Paul is reminding Titus that these instructions were previously given to him • They also (if not more so) confirm to the Cretan churches that Titus’ work is supported by Paul’s apostolic authority.

  7. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents Note the absence of a Thanksgiving section ●See Rom 1:8-17; 1 Cor 1:4-9) ●Others without Thanksgiving, see Galatians, James, 2 Peter, 1 Timothy How Believers Relate to One Another How Believers Live in Society Closing Greeting/Opening Older Men, women, and slaves Rise of Opponents and response Summary: How to Deal with Opponents Appoint Elders (and their Duties) General Teaching to All Summary Preface/Intro Doctrinal Basis Doctrinal Basis 1:1-4 1:5-9 1:10-16 2:1 2:2-10 2:11-14 2:15 3:1-2 3:3-7 3:8-11 3:12-15

  8. Titus Teaching the Church Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents Note the thrust of 1:5 appears to encompass the entire book… “Complete what is lacking.” How Believers Relate to One Another How Believers Live in Society Closing Greeting/Opening Older Men, women, and slaves Rise of Opponents and response Summary: How to Deal with Opponents Appoint Elders (and their Duties) General Teaching to All Summary Preface/Intro Doctrinal Basis Doctrinal Basis 1:5 1:1-4 1:5-9 1:10-16 2:1 2:2-10 2:11-14 2:15 3:1-2 3:3-7 3:8-11 3:12-15

  9. Titus • Now a quite similar passage to 1 Tim 3:1ff. • Yet, note subtle differences • Only elders, no deacons mentioned • “Not recent convert” eliminated • Suggests two points: • Local situation dictates church order, not prescribed and fixed structure. • Care must be taken to fully synthesize contents of all Pastorals into a composite whole. 10. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents Note what appears as another introduction in 2:1: “But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.” Seems to serve as a heading for all of chapter 2 (maybe rest of book?). 11. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents • 2:1-15 may be a unified whole: • An intro in 2:1 • Instructions in 2:2-10 • Doctrinal support in 2:11-15 • Summary in 2:15 How Believers Relate to One Another How Believers Live in Society Closing Greeting/Opening Older Men, women, and slaves Rise of Opponents and response Summary: How to Deal with Opponents Appoint Elders (and their Duties) General Teaching to All Summary Preface/Intro Doctrinal Basis Doctrinal Basis 2:2-10 1:1-4 1:5-9 1:10-16 2:1 2:2-10 2:11-14 2:15 3:1-2 3:3-7 3:8-11 3:12-15

  12. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents Note a fresh start in 3:1-2 (similar to 1 Tim 2:1 in words, yet different in purpose; not prayer but subjection) “Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed” Note shift to believers and the world. 13. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents • As we saw in 2:1-15; Paul repeats the structure: • Intro (3:1-2) • Instruction grounded in doctrine (3:3-7) • Summary (3:8-11) How Believers Relate to One Another How Believers Live in Society Closing Greeting/Opening Older Men, women, and slaves Rise of Opponents and response Summary: How to Deal with Opponents Appoint Elders (and their Duties) 3:1-11 General Teaching to All Summary Preface/Intro Doctrinal Basis Doctrinal Basis 1:1-4 1:5-9 1:10-16 2:1 2:2-10 2:11-14 2:15 3:1-2 3:3-7 3:8-11 3:12-15

  14. Titus Teach Sound Doctrine Appoint Elders – Danger from Opponents How Believers Relate to One Another How Believers Live in Society 3:15 is official closing of letter. Certainly indicates that more than Titus are to hear the message. 3:12-14 stands as specific instruction to Titus, standing on its own. Closing Greeting/Opening Older Men, women, and slaves Rise of Opponents and response Summary: How to Deal with Opponents Appoint Elders (and their Duties) General Teaching to All Summary Preface/Intro Doctrinal Basis Doctrinal Basis 3:12-15 1:1-4 1:5-9 1:10-16 2:1 2:2-10 2:11-14 2:15 3:1-2 3:3-7 3:8-11 3:12-15

  15. Titus’ Structure Observations 1. Appears as if Paul did not sit down with an explicit plan for its pattern of thought • Would it be fair to say that the letter was a bit more spontaneous? • His style in each chapter of Titus is repetitive • He introduces his idea • He give instructions, • He offers a basis of them in a doctrinal statement • He recapitulates or summarizes his thoughts

  16. Titus’ Structure Observations 2. The need in the church is for sound doctrine • Sound doctrine points toward ethical behavior (godliness) • Behavior spring from sound teaching. 3. Paul does not enter into controversy or debate with the heresy • Sound doctrine is voiced, heresy is almost ignored

  17. Titus Study: Getting Started • If I was to study the Book of Titus, there are three places of interest that the book’s structure might prompt me to look • Titus 1:5 – Book’s Overall Purpose • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Titus 2:11-15 – Definition of Sound Doctrine

  18. Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • NAS Titus 2:1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. • NIV Titus 2:1 You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Smith’s translation: But You speak (the things) that are fitting/proper of healthy (life-giving?) teaching.

  19. Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • But You… is in direct contrast of the teaching of the opponents in Titus 1:10-16 • Su. de. See also the other four times it occurs in the Pastoral Epistles: 1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Tim. 3:10, 14; 4:5.

  20. Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Note the definite article th/| • Thus, we are not talking about a choice among many sound teaching …but THE Sound Teaching.

  21. Titus Study: • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Note the word u`giainou,sh| (Lexical form: u`giai,nw) • 1. to be in good physical health, be healthy, literal meaning; 2. to be sound or free from error, be correct, figurative meaning. • 12 x’s in New Testament only 4 outside of the Pastoral Epistles, 3 of them in Luke

  22. Titus Study: • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Note the word u`giainou,sh| (Lexical form: u`giai,nw) • Jesus calling Levi: And Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. Luke 5:31 • Interesting to note that in the parallel Synoptic passages, Mark 2:17 and Matt 9:12 both use the word, “strong” (oi` ivscu, ontej) not healthy. • Jesus heals Centurion’s Servant: And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. Luke 7:10 • Parable of Prodigal Son: 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.‘ Luke 15:27 • Luke 5:31; 7:10; 15:27; 1 Tim. 1:10; 6:3; 2 Tim. 1:13; 4:3; Titus 1:9, 13; 2:1f; 3 John 1:2

  23. Titus Study: • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Note the noun form of the word (u`gih,j) which occurs 11 x’s in NT; 9 in Gospels Matt. 12:13; 15:31; Mark 5:34; John 5:6, 9, 11, 14f; 7:23; Acts 4:10; Titus 2:8 • 1. being physically well or sound, healthy, sound. 2. being un-corrupted or correct • Jesus heals Woman with Issue of Blood, “And He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.’” Mark 5:34 • Jesus to Paralytic “When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?“ John 5:6

  24. Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • Is sound doctrine/teaching healthy on its own? • Is sound doctrine/teaching healthy for hearers? • If our doctrine is lacking or diseased, then it is not sound or mature.

  25. Titus Study: Getting Started • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Su. de. la,lei a] pre,pei th/| u`giainou,sh| didaskali,a|Å • But Paul calls Titus not just to teach “sound doctrine…but also the things which are fitting…” • Connection between doctrine and ethics; creed and conduct; belief and practice • Young women…2:5 “that the word of God may not be dishonored.” • Slaves…2:10 “so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” • This means that its vital that our behavior fits our doctrine. Else we will dishonor the teaching.

  26. Titus Study: • Titus 2:1 – Introduction to 2:1-3:11 • Lesson 1: We are to be teachers of both doctrine and ethics • The sound doctrine • The things which are fitting • Lesson 2: We are to teach them in relation to each other. • Doctrine without ethics is empty and hollow • Ethics without doctrine is baseless • Lesson 3: We are to relate doctrine to ethics not only in general principles but in detailed applications • Rest of chapter is just this! • Or what about Holiness – Entire Sanctification.
