BACKGROUND The Government of Sindh has declared 8 districts as calamity-hit in September, 2018 due to prevailing drought conditions
Relief Department , Government of Sindh, has so far distributed 706,321 wheat bags (50 kg) among the 420,946 drought-affected families (Till 16.01.2019) RESPONSE BY RELIEF DEPARTMENT
RESPONSE BY PDMA In order to cater the nutritional needs of Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW), PDMA Sindh initiated provision of Ration Bags to PLW of Tharparkar and Umerkot districts for three months The composition of each Ration Bag is:

RESPONSE BY HEALTH DEPARTMENT • Medical Universities have been engaged to provide technical assistance to the Health Institutions in District Tharparkar • 16 Medical Camps have been established in District Tharparkar and 5087 patients have been treated till 09.01.2019 • In each medical camp “Nutrition Site” is also established • Mobile Medical Teams are also deputed, which have so far treated 99,270 patients • 289 Medical Officers, Woman Medical Officers, Specialists and Staff Nurses have been deputed in District Tharparkar • Against 245 vacant posts of District Tharparkar, 97 doctors have been recruited. The remaining posts have been re-advertised
RESPONSE BY AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT • Field schools for male and female farmers have been established • 607 water courses have been improved • 159 tractors have been provided • 22 tube-wells have been installed • Kitchen gardening has been encouraged through demonstrations and females have been trained on kitchen gardening • Farmers have been given vegetable seeds • Fruit / tree plantation has been initiated • There are proposed items for distribution like Solar Pumps and Tool Kits for agriculture • Agriculture implements have been provided • Awareness among community has been spread about cultivation and consumption of diversified vegetable and fruit crops to fulfill nutritional needs
RESPONSE BY IRRIGATION DEPARTMENT • Due to shortage of water, rotation plan has been introduced for all canals of Sindh in order to ensure equitable distribution of water from head to tail
RESPONSE BY LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT A number of 18,380,065 animals have been affected Following are the details of vaccines / treatment • Rs. 50.00 M have been released for four (04) Union Councils to Thar Foundation for fodder • Rs. 250.00 M have been further approved for fodder
GAPs • Against 420,946 drought-affected families, PDMA Sindh has provided 76,189 Ration Bags for a period of three (03) months, the remaining 344,757 drought-affected families need nutritional assistance • Fodder of 1.2 billion Rs is required for providing fodder to entire livestock of Tharparker
CURRENT / FUTURE NEEDS PDMA Sindh has requested NDMA to provide ration bags for 420,946 drought-affected families
RECOMMENDATIONS / WAY FORWARD • NDMA’s help in the form of ration bags to 420,946 drought-affected families for a period of six months may mitigate the suffering of these families to a greater extent • Fodder for live stock of Rs. 1.2 billion may be provided by the Federal Govt • Short term and long term measures are being prepared with the help of UN-FAO under “Sindh Drought Policy” • Federal Government and other partners may also consider for joining GOS for medium and long term measures as suggested by “Sindh Drought Policy”
