  5. How is a Narrative Essay formatted? • Begin with an introductory statement or lead sentence • Establish a topic or main idea • Support the topic or main idea, using detail • End with a conclusion to sum up the topic or main idea

  6. What is a lead sentence? • Introduces the story • Gives a hint about the main idea or topic • Suggests how the writer may feel about a topic • Gets the reader hooked or interested

  7. What is the topic or main idea? • Point in telling the story • Like a thesis statement • Key element the reader is to understand

  8. How does one support the topic? • Tell of the events in sequential order * Using sensory details * Appealing to the reader’s emotions * Using figurative and descriptive language * Referring to characters, a setting, conflicts, etc. • Maintain focus and relevance to the main idea or topic

  9. What does a conclusion do? • Tells of the last events • Finalizes the writer’s thoughts or feelings • Sums up the main idea or topic
