Our Instructional Focus September Unit of Study Step 1: Determine classroom routines specific to writing Step 2: Create writing centers Step 3: Determine each student’s phase in the writing continuum Step 4: Create individualized student writing rubrics looking at the writing behaviors Step 5: Plan for designated writing periods based off of Teachers College Writer’s Workshop and First Author Curriculum. Writing Units of Study Step 6: Follow outlined writing scope and sequence to expose students to a variety of writing purposes Step 7: Engage students in daily expressive writing opportunities Step 8: Produce expressive pieces of writing to be evaluated by the individualized student writing rubric at the end of each unit.

Unit Alignment to DLM • All Reading, Science and Math Units of Study (K - High School) are aligned to the Dynamic Learning Maps Blueprints • These are sets of skills connected to the grade equivalent standards • The New York State Alternate Assessment tasks come from the skills in the DLM Blueprints • ALL tested essential elements in the blueprints are covered in our 4 Units of study throughout the year.

  15. Summative Assessments SANDI/FAST • SANDI is a needs assessment that lists various skills across areas such as reading, writing, and math. • Students score anywhere between 1 and 4 • SANDI is administered by classroom teachers and related service providers. • SANDI/FAST levels our students based on their performance in a list of key skills. ABLLS • The ABLLS-R, is a device for assessing skills in children with language and learning deficits and is most commonly used in the process of the development of a behavioral program for children in the autism spectrum. • The ABLLS-R contains a task analysis of the many skills necessary to communicate successfully and to learn from everyday experiences. NYSAA • NYSAA is part of the New York State testing program that measures the attainment of the State’s learning standards in the areas of English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science for all students with the most severe disabilities in Grades 3-8 and high school. • The NYSAA in ELA, mathematics, and science will be assessed using Dynamic Learning Maps alternate assessment.

Formative Assessments Benchmark Assessments • Progress throughout out the year is measured through benchmark assessments. • These are completed once at the beginning of the year during Assessment Month which gives us our baseline and then at the end of each unit of study. • The benchmarks consist of a leveled list of skills all connected to the DLM that are covered through the units of study. Writing Rubrics • Progress towards our Instructional focus is measured through individualized writing rubrics. • The rubrics were created using a list of writing behaviors in the following categories: Topic Diversity, Organization, Supporting Details and Stamina. • Each student produced a baseline piece of writing to be evaluated and a rubric was developed for each student based on that writing sample.
