How to Take the Pill • Initiate on first Day of period. • Barrier methods for 7/7 if not. • Barrier Methods for 14/7 if after emergency contraception. • Same time each day. • COC take 21 Days, 7 Days pill free. • POP take continuously
Missed Pills • COC • 1 missed pill no detriment. • 2 missed – take last mist pill and finish pack as normal. • Start new pack if <7 days before pill free period • Use BM for next 7 days.
Missed Pills • POP • If > 3hrs late / 12 hrs Cerazette • Take missed pill ASAP • Use BM for 2 days • Above advice aplies to if pt has D+V within 2hrs of taking pill.
COC Risk and Side Effects Side Effects • Oestrogenic • headache • Nausea • Progestrogenic • Breast tenderness • Breakthrough bleeding Risks • Breast Cancer • Hypertension • Stroke • DVT • 1 in 100 failure
POP Risks and Side Effects • Side Effects • Progestogenic • Breast tenderness • Break though bleeding / amenorrhoea • Weight gain • Risks • Ovarian Cysts • Ectopic pregnancy • Breast Cancer • 1 in 100 failure
