This study evaluates the impact of a physiotherapeutic intervention on functional impairments in total hip arthroplasty patients over a short follow-up period. Results show improved muscle strength, range of motion, and quality of life in the intervention group compared to verbal instructions alone. Physiotherapy care protocol demonstrates superior outcomes, emphasizing the importance of physiotherapists in successful THA rehabilitation.

Aim • Determine effectiveness of physiotherapeutic in-hospital intervention protocol for reducing functional impairments in total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients during a short follow-up period. • Relevance • Without a rehabilitation program, THA patients will develop functional limitations.
Method • 106 THA patients. • THA protocol (THAP) group: • Verbal instructions + physiotherapy exercise demonstrations. • THA physiotherapy care protocol (THAPCP) group: • Same verbal instructions and demonstrations + daily exercise practice guided by physiotherapist. • Outcomes: • Muscle strength force, goniometry, Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, and Merle d’Aubigné and Postel score. • Assessed preoperatively and 15 d postoperatively.
Results • THAPCP group: • Higher muscle strength force scores. • More degrees in range of motion. • Greater improvements in Merle d’Aubigné and Postel score.
Conclusion • Intervention in THAPCP group: • Improved functional capacity, quality of life, mobility, muscle strength, goniometry, and pain at end of follow-up period. • Appears to be a safe tool for accelerating recovery in THA patients. • Emphasizes importance of physiotherapist in successful THA rehabilitation.
