  7. Context • Part 1 examined the big picture of adding items to bibliographic records. • This course assumes you have completed the objectives of Part 1. • This course specifically focuses on the volume field of the item record.

  8. What is volume control? Volume control allowsyouto place hold requests on: • a single issue of a magazine • a single volume of a multipart book • a single disc of a multipart audiovisual item • If there are multiple volumes attached to one bibliographic record you will need to add information in the volume field. • If an item is part of a series each title in the series has its own bibliographic record, volume control is not required.

When to use volume control • The following are examples of when you need to enter information in the volume field. • If the item does not match any of the following options then the volume field must be left blank. • When creating an item record the format and spacing in the volume field must be correct in order for volume control to work properly.

  10. Accuracy counts • Spacing • Note the inclusion or lack of spacing on each example. • Capital and lowercase letters • Ensure that you are using capital letters when required. • Spelling • Note the spelling of the abbreviations and descriptions.
