Overview • Where is it?????? • In the brain, connected to the hypothalamus • What does it look like? This • A pea sized cherry
Function • Secretes hormones to control the following body processes: • 1) growth • 2) blood pressure • 3) conversion of food into energy • 4) water regulation • 5) temperature regulation • 6) sex organ functions
Regions • Anterior: secretes growth hormone, and ACTH which stimulates the adrenal gland • Posterior: secretes vasopressin which stimulates capillary muscles and reduces the flow of urine and increases its concentration • Intermediate part (pars intermedia): secretes MSH, a melanocyte-stimulating hormone
Disorders • Pituitary infarction- death of an area of tissue in the pituitary gland • Hypopituitarism- pituitary gland doesn’t produce normal amounts of hormones • Pituitary tumor- cancer on the pituitary gland • Acromegaly- too much growth hormone which Causes the body tissues to get larger over time
What is the name of the structure that forms a boundary between the anterior and posterior portions of the pituitary gland?
Which structure connects the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus?
What wraps the pituitary stalk in a highly vascularized sheath?
