Classical Music • Composers such as Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948) and Carlos Chavez (1899-1978) are recognized in Mexico as important to the classical music world.
Classical History • Many composers depended on patronage to survive. • Patrons included kings, members of nobility, and sometimes wealthy church leaders. • Composers were contract employees. • Examples of classical composers included Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The Emerging Middle Class • As the classical period advanced, more people made more money. • As the middle class advanced, they wanted to share the cultural entertainments of the elite class. • These included music, theatre, and literature. • Some merchants enrolled their children in music lessons.
Emerging Middle Class • Sometimes composers wrote music specifically for amateur musicians. • They used familiar folk and popular tunes as themes for their classical symphonies. • Mozart and Haydn wrote dance music for public balls.
Chamber Music • Chamber Music- music written during the classical period for small ensembles • This music was not played for large concert halls, but in rooms or chambers. • Most of these concerts took place in private homes for social gatherings and at parties. • This music provided entertainment for nobility, clergy and the arising middle class.
