How to Survive in Aalborg and at Aalborg University Tips and tricks from Rasmus & Rasmus
The Relationship Between You and Your Teacher • Informal culture • It’s all very casual and down-to-earth • Remember to adress your teacher by his/her first name
The Structure of a Semester • Structured in a very different way • It’s NOT 4-5 different courses with different professors, different projects etc. • It’s ONE semester project about ONE subject – and you attend ONE exam • ….. maybe some of you will get some smaller assignments on the side
Responsibility for Your Own Learning • If you want to learn something, it’s your own responsibility • Requires you to be active • Problem-based-learning • You create your own case and use the entire semester to solve it • Don’t be fooled: The teachers expect that you know the stuff • Besides… it’s generally not mandatory to meet up at lectures – but do it anyway!
The Group – Say hello to your new temporary family • Normally you and 4-5 other persons • Find some persons that you function with – academically and socially • It may sound frightening to some of you – but it’s fun! • A word of advice: Most importantly - choose your group on basis of an interest in the same subject! • Be openminded and tolerant • It’s NOT every man for himself – you do things together!
The dilemma: When do I have time to have fun? • September • October • November • December • January – after exams
HUMOUR • Irony and sarcasm: Don’t take jokes personally • It can be difficult to understand in the beginning, but nobody is trying to insult you • We have fun about everything – and everyone… even our Queen.

Unwritten Rules • Don’t break rules • Don’t expect a ”Thank You” • Don’t tip • Skip the ”How are you?” • Don’t forget the three P’s: Privacy, privacy and privacy • Don’t be surprised by open opinions
The Party Culture • A pre-party starts at 9 or 10 pm • You go to a club at 1 or 2 am – and you go home at 5 or 6 am • Jomfru Ane Gade 40 clubs in one street! • Danes get loud and drunk – we like to have fun • A good chance of expanding your network! • It is possible to have a fun night out without going crazy • Write down these places: Studenterhuset, Viva La Revolucion, Platform 4 • GO OUT – School is not everything!
1: Use your student discounts! • Discounts on clothes, electronics and food! • Try Nadias Sandwich or any of the small restaurants!
3: Use the library! • Free wifi • Free music streaming on smart phones • Around 20000 dvd’s and blu-rays • International events
The 4 Seasons… • Spring: 8-15 degrees • Summer: 15-25 degrees • Fall: 5-10 degrees – and a looooot of rain • Winter: • 3 to -5 degrees (without the wind blowing!)
