Antarctic Exploration History • Roald Amundsen – Norwegian • Robert Falcon Scott – British • Sir Ernest Shackleton – British • Amundsen won the race to the South Pole in 1911, beating Scott by a couple of weeks • Scott froze to death in his tent only miles away from a cache of food on the return trip • The last great major feat left after the race to the Pole was a crossing of the entire Antarctic continent, so Shackleton set out with this goal in 1914
“MEN WANTED FOR HAZARDOUS JOURNEY; SMALL WAGES, BITTER COLD—LONG MONTHS OF COMPLETE DARKNESS, SAFE RETURN DOUBTFUL; HONOR AND RECOGNITION IN CASE OF SUCCESS.” • Ad placed in local newspapers by Shackleton
