WHAT OPSEC IS • Denying any useful information to the enemy • A mindset, a way of thinking • Applied to Web pages, blogs, emails • A standard that can be applied to any situation “mindset” {noun} a set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines one’s behavior, outlook and mental attitude. UNCLASSIFIED

  4. PIECES OF INFORMATION – IT’S LIKE A PUZZLE UNCLASSIFIED

  5. WHO WOULD TRY TO GET INFORMATION FROM A SPOUSE? • Foreign intelligence • Terrorists • Criminals • Computer hackers UNCLASSIFIED

WHAT DO THEY WANT? • Names/photographs of important people • Present and future U.S. capabilities • Meetings of top officials • News about U.S. diplomacy • U.S. positions • Important government places • Information about military facilities: • - Location • - Units • - Weapons used • - Fortifications & tunnels • - Amount of lighting • - Exterior size and shape • - Number of soldiers & officers • - Ammunition depot locations • - Leave policies • - Brigades and names of companies • - Degree & speed of mobilization UNCLASSIFIED

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE • Ensure that the information posted has no significant value to the enemy • Always assume that the enemy is reading what you’re writing • Be careful about discussing information in public settings (Clubs, airports, gyms) • Avoid publically (online or real life) speculation about future missions (“they’ll probably start building up here next”) UNCLASSIFIED

PIECES OF INFORMATION Be especially careful to safeguard “indicators,” or pieces of information that provide clues about future activities • Equipment load dates • Increase in field exercises • Ceremonies • Personal vehicle storage • Increase in financial activity, such as wills and powers of attorneys UNCLASSIFIED

  11. TELEPHONES Remember that cordless phones and cell phones are NOT completely secure! Anything you say is transmitted over the airwaves and can be intercepted. The same is true with landline phones! Lines can be crossed or intentionally intercepted! UNCLASSIFIED

  12. THE BOTTOM LINE Think like the “bad guy” before you post something online or have a public conversation UNCLASSIFIED
