    1. Team Plus One “Ministry for All and All for Ministry” New Dreams/New Vision’s Dynamic Model for Ministry 1 Talking Notes The purpose of this ministry tool is to help New Dreams/New Visions congregations and clergy think about a different way of looking at leadership as it applies to mission and ministry in a congregation. The tool hopes to introduce they to a “gathered around a round table” shape of leadership and away from a “Rector at the head of the table” shape of leadership. Note: “Plus One” comes from a model used by Toyota Corporation and taught in non-profit management courses for leadership training. Toyota uses a “Team plus One” approach to organization: gathering groups of people around their tasks as equal members of the team, but at the same time assigning some accountability and responsibility to the “plus One” – not as The Leader, but as an equal at the table with a “plus One” factor. Begin your session with some silence and a prayer.Talking Notes The purpose of this ministry tool is to help New Dreams/New Visions congregations and clergy think about a different way of looking at leadership as it applies to mission and ministry in a congregation. 2. God wants us to be engaged in ministry… together everywhere with joy using our gifts and skills 2 Talking Notes So, if this is true….. Ask them to draw a shape that represents your congregation’s leadership structure. Ask them to share the drawing and say something briefly about why they chose that shape. 3. Who does what, when, where… How is a congregation like a ship… Who is the captain? Who are the officers? Who keeps the ship on course? Who keeps the engines running? Can you think of other metaphors for your congregation? 3 Talking Notes Use this metaphor as an opportunity to ask people about the various ROLES the vestry, wardens and clergy play. Take them through the slide (we have noted some classic answers – but do not tell them): Who is the captain? The Rector, the Bishop, the Sr. Warden; God Who are the officers? Vestry, committee chairs Who keeps the ship on course? The Rector, the Vestry, the Holy Spirit, Who keeps the engine running? Treasurer, our pledges, You might quickly put their ideas on newsprint. After you gather their answers ask them what kind of ship it seems to be? Often is seems like a Cruise Ship: We paid for the ride and we are expecting a cruise! Ask if there might be better / other metaphors. In the next 3 slides we are trying to help people discover a more mutual Christian Model of being the body of Christ.Talking Notes Use this metaphor as an opportunity to ask people about the various ROLES the vestry, wardens and clergy play. 4. We are in a “Time Between” Authoritarian collaborative team Rector-Warden Rector-Vestry Mutual accountability = being clear about who is responsible for what Easy to get caught between roles and expectations.
