Litter Your problem?
Why is it my problem? • Litter is swamping our oceans and is washing up on beaches. It kills wildlife, looks disgusting, is a hazard to our health and costs millions to clear up.. Marine wildlife gets entangled in litter and accidentally ingests it. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and the bags block their stomachs, often leading to death from starvation. Seabirds mistake floating plastic litter for food. Plastic never biodegrades. It just breaks down into small pieces but does not disappear.
Why is it my problem? • Green and pleasant land? • Plastic bags flapping in trees, chewing gum on every pavement, fast-food cartons strewn in gutters • Do you want to live in a country like this?
“Litter in Glasgow is at epidemic proportions. It is just simply part of the culture in Glasgow and its surroundings towns that you throw anything you don't need on the ground in front of you. I have even seen people standing next to bins and still throwing things on the road. And don't get me started on drivers tipping their ashtrays out of the car window!” John Delaney, GlasgowDo you agree with John?
What can I do? • Pick it up! It won't hurt and nobody will laugh at you... • Report heavily littered streets and roads to your Council - they have to pick it up... • Write to your MP and ask him/her to urge the Government to introduce a 10p deposit on drinks cans and bottles...... • Write to Coca-Cola, Red Bull and McDonalds and ask them why their products are so heavily littered and what they are going to do about it .... • Pick up some more litter - there's lots of it. • Can you think of anything we can do in Bellahouston Academy?
