Problem Motivation Annually - millions of tons of trash, billions ofdollars http://thewritefuture.typepad.com/.a/6a014e5fad2aa4970c014e8ad520da970d-800wi
Problem Motivation • Trash on UMD campus • Beneficial if students and campus visitors would dispose of trash and recyclables correctly
Problem Description • Littering, items in wrong bins, cigarettes • Difficulty finding open trash bins
Past Solutions • iRecycle • WeRecycle • Very similar to our idea but applied to the University of Georgia campus
More Past Solutions • RecycleMore • Recycle For Greater Manchester app • Tiramisu https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/recycle-for-greater-manchester/id432310222?mt=8 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tiramisu/id429707931?mt=8 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=recycle.recPac&hl=en
Proposed Solution • Mobile web app • Technologies: • Google Maps API • Database Profiling • Users can: • Find (closest) bins on campus • Log new or temporary bins • Mark overflowing or unusable bins
Why is LitterLess Unique? • Education • Social profiles / gamifying • Event-focused, campus-focused • Football games, concerts, move-out days
Formative Research Methods • Interview • Observation • South Campus Diner at 5:00 PM • North Campus Diner at 5:30 PM • Outside McKeldin Library at 5:30 PM
Formative Research Results • Interview • Most people have seen others litter • Difficult to find available trash cans • Observation • Litter in areas close to trash cans • Cigarette waste is a problem
Target Users • University of Maryland students • North Campus students • South Campus students • Visitors • Parents • Professors
How Users will Benefit? • Less hassle • Cleaner campus • More eco-conscious http://www.umd.edu/fall2011photoshoot/slides/ZC4U6674.JPG http://www.urhome.umd.edu/marylandimages/image/fs/70.jpg
Conclusion • Littering is prevalent on campus • Not enough trash cans • Bins not emptied frequently enough • Provide an incentive for proper trash disposal http://www.mrdaley.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/badges.jpg
