The Ludlum Project Scintillating and wave shifting fibers
The Ludlum Project History
The Ludlum Project • Collaboration between Notre Dame, Ludlum Measurements in Sweetwater,TX and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.
The Ludlum Project • Chuck Hurlbut of Ludlum Measurements and Dr. Ruchti have worked together for 20 years. • Hurlbut was the fiber contact for Bicron in Cleveland during the Super Conducting Super Collider(SSC) days until he left and eventually joined the family-owned Ludlum Measurements.
The Ludlum Project • Ludlum Measurements is a manufacturer of radiation detection and measurement equipment for medical, nuclear, and oil industries. • Small Business Innovation in Research proposal submitted to DOE and approved. • Currently in Phase II.
The Ludlum Project • Dr. Kaufman is an Organic Chemist at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science who synthesizes the dyes from flowers. • Ludlum Measurements incorporates the dyes into the scintillators and prepares the samples. • Notre Dame tests and analyzes the samples.
The Ludlum Project • Dr. Ruchti invited Dr. Bishop to run the testing and analysis of the project. • QuarkNet teachers and students help run the tests and will help with analysis both last summer and this summer.
The Ludlum Project • Dr. Jim Bishop
The Ludlum Project • Dr. Randy Ruchti
The Ludlum Project • Kevin Alby • Jeff Chorny • Helene Dauerty • Nick Erdman • Maggie Jensen • Beth Beiersdorf • Greg Kohn
The Ludlum Project Motivation
The Ludlum Project • Ludlum can develop new scintillators. • Kaufman at Philadelphia receives funding to continue research. • Notre Dame can create new particle detectors.
The Ludlum Project • Minimize the crossing interval • Fermi 396 ns • CMS 25 ns • Future 1 ns
The Ludlum Project • Ensure the durability of fibers in a radioactive environment. • Determine whether wavelength is absorbed by the waveguide. • Test for a fast response time.
The Ludlum Project General Characteristics
The Ludlum Project • Scintillators • Absorb energy from anexcited lattice • Emit energy as light • Wavelength shifters • Absorb light and re-radiate at different l.
The Ludlum Project Tests
The Ludlum Project • Hitachi Spectrophotometer • gives peak excitationand emission spectrum.
The Ludlum Project • Scintillation test
The Ludlum Project • Scintillation test • measures intensity of light output from scintillation • excited by Sr-90 • Output detected by PMT
The Ludlum Project • LaserTest • Determines the lifetime • When the laser light hits the sample, how fast does the emitted light come out? • Faster is better for new accelerators
The Ludlum Project • Radiation Damage • University of Michigan • 1 Mrad in a reactor • All three tests are repeated
The Ludlum Project Results
The Ludlum Project The unexpected
The Ludlum Project • Laser decay tail. • Occasional improved results after irradiation. • Excitation spectrum is different than spectrum in solvent. • Scintillating Snapple
