Outline About Me Why Engineering? Undergraduate research at SUNY REU Research: Photothermal Imaging REU Experiences NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Presentation Overview
NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Introduction About Me • Born and raised in Loudonville, NY • Competitive Irish dancer for over 12 years • Disney fanatic • Shaker High School, Latham, NY – Class of 2013 • UAlbany/SUNY Poly – Class of 2017 • Nano Engineering major, Math minor • Concentration: Emerging Materials & Device Engineering
Why Engineering? Science and math are strong subjects for me Museum of Science field trip in 6th grade Science Enrichment Day in elementary school Hands-on experiments I still enjoy engineering and I plan on going to graduate school for Materials Science and Engineering NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Influences
Previous Research Experience “Self-Assembling Hydrogels for 3D Monolayer Cell Growth: The ‘Bio Roll-Up’ Project” – PI: Prof. Robert Brainard Summer 2014 – Fall 2015: SUNY CNSE Summer Internship Program Skills learned: photolithography, wet lab chemistry “Modulation of Photoluminescence Emission of SiCO via SiCO/SiO2 Multi-layer Films” – PI: Prof. Spyridon (Spyros) Galis Fall 2015 – Present: Undergraduate Research Assistant, SUNY Polytechnic Institute Skills learned: optical characterization, fabrication processes “Detection and Quantification of Engineered Nanoparticles (ENPs) in Water and Wastewater Environments” – PI: Prof. Xinchao (Steven) Wei Summer 2015: SUNY STEM Research Passport Program, SUNYIT Skills learned: wet lab chemistry, semiconductor manufacturing processes NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Research Experience
NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Summer Research REU in Integrated Nanomanufacturing – UltraFast Optics Group • PI: Professor Michelle Y. Sander • 5th floor Photonics Building • Project Title: Characterization and Imaging with Mid-Infrared Vibrational Photothermal Spectroscopy • Expectations: • New research experience • Grow my professional network • Professional development • Sharpen my presentation skills • Experience living in a bigger city like Boston
NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Summer Research Goals Summer Research Goals System Characterization • Relatively new, non-commercial system • Need to determine the capabilities of the system • Compare photothermal system with FTIR, a commercial product often used for mid-IR spectroscopy Sample Characterization • Imaging resolution and sensitivity • Film thicknesses FTIR Photothermal
NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Summer Research Goals Tasks Completed So Far • Optical Alignment of the photothermal system • Wide Field Microscopy on photothermal system • Sample Preparation • Trained on the FTIR • Preliminary measurements • Data analysis
Positives and Negatives NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 REU Experiences: Positives and Negatives • Meeting new people from all over the country • I was able to adjust to the work environment fairly quickly, within the first week or so • PI and mentor were away at a conference for the first two weeks, but I was given readings to complete • Helped me understand some of the fundamentals of the project
NSF REU INM Introductory Day for RET Participants - July 5, 2016 Thank You!
