Does Gender Affect How Fast You Read??? By: Shelbi Fenwick
Problem: • Does gender really affect how you read? Read more to find out!
Introduction: • I chose to do this because I’m not that great of a reader so I figured it would be fun to see if gender affects how fast you read. So I thought I would test to see how fast girls are to boys as boys are to girls…
Background Information: • The book I am testing people on is called Eggs. The author of the book is Jerry Spinelli. I tested everyone separately and in the same spot, in the hallway right in front of the Resource Room.
Hypothesis: • I think that girls read faster because most of the guys at my school don’t like to read so they aren’t as fast as some of the girls. Most of the girls at my school like reading and are very fast. The guys just don’t seem to care at all about reading.
Materials: • Eggs book, a little test from what they read, stopwatch, science journal to record in, Veronica, Cristina, Jessica R., Hannah, Holly, Tristen V., Clayton, Brayden, Erik, Bryan, and a quiet room to read in separately
Procedure: • I will bring my Eggs book to school, bring the first person on the my list and take him/her into a quiet room with all my supplies, then I would have him/her read some of the chapters, then they will take the 1-7 test with the option of using the book
Major Observation: • I saw that everyone decided to stop after reading chapter 2 and use the book on the test. I probably would’ve done the same thing though… And almost everyone that I tested got stuck on question 2 and 3 on the test.
Results: • Girls | Boys • Veronica~ 5min. 50sec. (5/7) |Tristen~ 9min. 0sec. (3/7) • Cristina~ 5min. 7sec. (2/7) |Clayton~ 6min. 26sec. (7/7) • Jessica~ 5min. 28sec. (2/7) |Brayden~ 5min. 54sec. (6/7) • Hannah~ 4min. 53sec. (7/7) |Erik~ 5min. 37sec. (5/7) • Holly~ 6min. 4sec. (3/7) |Bryan~ 5min. 38sec. (6/7)
Conclusion: • Most of the girls read fester that the guys BUT the guys did better on the little reading test. Taking your time while reading is good because I think you can absorb more information. So if the girls would’ve taken their time and read to a speed that they could get more information so they could do better on the test. But they all did a good job!
Possible Applications: • I’m a slow reader, but that is fine to me because that is how I absorb more information so I can better understand the book I am reading. I don’t think that reading fast or slow makes a difference because I would rather read really slow that not being able to read at all.
Possible Causes Of Errors: • Almost everyone got stuck on question numbers 2 and 3, so I gave them all the same suggestions that they could have a clue or just guess. Most of the people I tested wanted a clue. So I said for #2’s hint, it has 3 letters and is a common name and for #3’s hint was it had an animal’s name in it
Bibliography: • I didn’t really have to look anything up I just used my natural resources…
Acknowledgement: • 5 boys and 5 girls were tested in my experiment. Tristen Vagts, Clayton Duft, Brayden Hosman, Erik Vogt, and Bryan Anschutz were all the guys I tested. And Veronica Norez, Cristina Silva, Jessica Ricker, Hannah Hendricks, and Holly Davis are all the girls I tested. I used them for reading a couple of chapters and taking a short test. Thank you very much for your time.
