Washington • Was a(n) • Educator • Reformer • Most influential African American leader of his time • Urged African Americans to accept discrimination for the time being and concentrate on elevating themselves through hard work and material prosperity • Wanted African American to educate in the crafts such as industrial and farming skills • Said that if African Americans did this they would win respect of white and it would lead to them being fully accepted as regular citizens. W.E.B. Dubois • Was a(n) • Scholar • African American intellectual • Political Thinker • Did not agree with Washington’s philosophy • Said Washington’s philosophy would only serve to perpetuate white oppression • Believed African Americans were as proficient as any other race. • Help found the NAACP Mama preferred W.E.B. Dubois philosophy over Booker T. Washington’s philosophy. Found Washington philosophy to be foolish.

  3. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. • Believed that African Americans were just as good as any other race (Same belief as Mama). • Wanted to protest peacefully • Moved into an all white neighborhood (Younger Family) • Caucasians wanted felt they were superior (Younger Family)

My Ethnic Background • I’m 100% Nigerian • I loathe my ethnic background • Our family to take part in some customs • Bow to elders • Call anyone old enough to be your parent your aunt or uncle • Don’t say the truth (e.g. If your parents are lying don’t say that they’re lying • Etc. • Like the physical accept of being Nigerian • Athletic

  6. Conclusion • Human beings are suppressive • Human beings are controlling • Human beings are covetous • Don’t let any human being hold you back
