Today’s In: pg. 98 • Quickwrite: (3 min) How would life be different if we ran out of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) tomorrow? Think about how fossils fuels affect your daily routine.
Monday Nov. 5 • Quick-write/In • Standards and Objectives • Intro to Fossil Fuels • Gallery Walk Activity!!!
Standards: • Strand 3: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives • Concept 2: Science and Technology in Society
Objectives: • PO1: Analyze various forms of nonrenewable energy • PO2: Support a position on a science or technology issue
What would happen if we ran out of fossil fuels tomorrow?!
What are fossil fuels? • The remains of ancient organisms that changed into coal, oil and natural gas!
Our choice of fuels and our dependence on them has huge economical and environmental consequences!
Gallery Walk Activity • Each station has a poster with a quote, prompt or problem on it • Using your prior knowledge respond meaningfully to the prompts
Expectations Renewable Energy Gallery What you are doing • Reading the quotes on each poster • Recording a response in your notebook • As a group, come up with the best response and write it on the poster • Presenting the posters • Write your reflections in your notebooks and on the posters • Work together • Stay on task • Ask questions and discuss the topics
Each group member has a role! • 1- Recorder • 2- Discussion leader • 3- Timekeeper (5 mins) • 4- Focus keeper • 5- Editor
Pg. 101 • Fossil Fuels Gallery Walk
Post-it on the door! Write… • one thing you were confused about, didn’t understand, had a question about or would like to learn regarding nonrenewable energy
Today’s OUT: (5-8 sentences) • Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney firmly supports the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, a pipeline running from Canada to Texas that would transport thousands of barrels of crude oil to the United States and across the globe every day. He argues that the pipeline would create jobs and lower the cost of oil; However, President Obama argues that the pipeline would have negative effects on the environment, and that we should focus on investing in renewable energy instead. Write a brief letter (5-8 sentences) persuading whomever you disagree with to change their mind.
Nobody begins to pack up until the buzzer sounds! Work quietly and productively on your OUTS and Post-its!
How do you burn coal cleaner? • Better technology • Carbon capture and storage • Low sulfur coal
When will we run out of nonrenewable resources? • Oil: 46 years (depleted in 2055) • Natural gas: 63 years (depleted in 2072) • Coal: 119 years (depleted in 2128)
5 main factors • Cost • Safety • Availability • Byproducts of the fuel’s use • Energy Content
Fossil Fuels • Electricity • Turbine • Steam • Heat • Generator
Electric Generator • A machine that converts mechanical energy (motion) into electricity. • They move an electrically conductive material in a magnetic field.
Turbine • A wheel that changes the force of moving gas or liquid into energy
Do people in the U.S. use less energy than those in developing countries?
The United States uses more energy per person than any other country in the world, except Canada and the United Arab Emirates!
