4. Culture - Communication Edward T. Hall (1959). The Silent Language. “Culture is communication and communication is culture.” : • A person’s culture determines the way the person communicates. Each individual learns the culture’s language, rules, and norms, and learns them at an early age. • The culture teaches each person how to speak, when it is appropriate to speak, what to speak about, to whom to speak, and other aspects of the person’s oral communicative behavior. A person learns to speak, therefore, following the dictates of his or her culture. • Culture and communication become inseparable. The way people communicate reflects the way they live.
