Unification of Germany • 1848 • Prussia established a customs union “Zollverein” to unify German states with trade, but excluded Austria causing rivalry. • 1861 • William I of Prussia replaced the unstable Frederick William IV, reformed the army, doubled it’s size. • 1862 • Parliament rejected military budget, William turns to Otto von Bismarck to defy parliament and unite Germany through “blood and iron”!

  4. Bismarck now has Kaiser (Emperor) William I proclaim the German Empire in January of 1871! Unification of Germany • 1864 • Prussia and Austria go to war to prevent Denmark from annexing Schleswig-Holstein. (All-German War). • 1866 • Austro-Prussian War: Prussia wins, creates the North German Confederation. (Seven Weeks War). • Southern states remain independant • 1870-71 • Franco-Prussian War: Prussia wins at Sedan and absorbs more of Southern Germany. • Force heavy reparations on France of 5 billion francs AND lost Alsace-Lorraine.

  7. Step 3: Germany 1870-1871 1870-1871: Franco-Prussian War: 1871: Alsace and Lorraine become part of German Empire 1871: Kaiser William I crowned emperor and creates the Second Reich France gives up Alsace- Lorraine
