  1. White Knight Tap Locator HJ Arnett Industries, LLC Portland, OR 800-684-9844

  2. Always wear proper safety equipment when operating the White Knight Make sure all connections are secure Power up the White Knight and make sure it goes through the self check mechanism and look at the software (SW) version which should say 4.2. Also, make sure the battery is charged above 8 volts First Things First

  3. Hooking up the White Knight • Attach one of the neutral connectors to the White Knight • Hook the alligator clip of the neutral to the neutral in the meter base • Place the White Knight in the meter socket making sure the stabs on the back fit into the receptacle in the meter base • Make sure the White Knight is tight so it will not fall out when you start using it

  4. Hook one of the neutral cords to the back of the White Knight Attach the green alligator clip of the neutral through the hole in the bottom of the base adaptor Place the White Knight into the base adaptor securely. Hook the three alligator clips up to the meter base Make sure to subtract 7’ from the reading of the White Knight to account for the length of the base adaptor cord Using the Base Adaptor

  5. Begin Operation of White Knight • We will walk through different screens on the WK as they appear in sequential order when the unit is powered on. • Each screen presents different options that can be selected by using the buttons on the face plate of the unit. • Navigating the screens is relatively simple, but it will definitely take a couple uses to become comfortable with all of the screens.

  6. Battery charge at the top Recall: recall a saved investigation Overhead/Underground: which service to be investigated Other: choose a different wire size or use test cable Cal Date: when last calibrated at the factory Opening Screen

  7. Recall Location- up to 8 investigations can be recalled at any time. Clear or erase a location -once an investigation is erased from the WK it cannot be recovered. Save to computer first Go to the next location- view other saved locations Edit the message for a saved investigation- add an investigation name for easy recall Recalling an Investigation

  8. An investigation name can be edited at any time, therefore we recommend doing this at a safe place, away from where the investigation is taking place. Use cursor buttons on the right side and the numbers/letters on the screen enter desired info like investigation number or street address of the place being investigated Editing a Investigation Name

  9. Select whether you are investigating underground or overhead service from the first display screen Choose the Correct wire size-Very Important to be correct Choose damp or dry conditions. If not sure run an investigation for both conditions Other cable sizes may be calibrated to match your test needs. See manual for method. Test Options- Cable Selection

  10. This function helps eliminate legitimate taps. Examples include: transformers or cable connections being detected as taps. The distance you enter is an estimated distance to the legitimate tap. To bypass this function and begin test press CANCEL. By either pressing OK or CANCEL the White Knight will begin the investigation Tap Rejection Screen

  11. Display Mode: how to represent the information on the screen Line Selection: which lines do you want to view from the investigation Range: Total distance of screen being displayed Separation: When viewing all lines, would you like them separated or overlaying one another Sensitivity: NORMAL for the USA Display Screen

  12. Pulse Graph vs. Step Graph • As you will see the displays of the two modes of graphs are quite different but using both to verify each other is recommended. • The STEP mode graph is a graph of impedance with respect to distance. • The PULSE mode graph is a graph of the rate of change in impedance with respect to distance. • We do not recommend using the TEXT mode at this time because it is difficult to understand.

  13. The perforated horizontal line in the middle of the screen is the Tap Awareness Line. When the impedance of the wire dips to or below this line, this is where a tap is likely to be. Move the cursor over to where the impedance change just starts to dip for finding the distance. Remember, if you are using the base adaptor, subtract 7 feet from the reading. Reading the Step Mode Graph 21 feet – 7 feet = 14 feet to tap

  14. There are a set of dots right above the tap awareness line, these dots represent the average impedance of the cable we chose for this test. The graphical line should hover around this set of dots if the wire size is input correctly. This graph shows no tap and wire size just over 49 feet, or 50ft. for test cable length. As the graphical line moves up/down on the graph it shows the line’s end: Upward depicts an open line end. Downward depicts a line short or closed end. Reading the Step Mode Graph

  15. The perforated horizontal line in the middle of the graph is the average impedance of the inputted wire. The set of dots directly below the perforated line is the tap awareness line. When the graph dips below this set of dots that is the result of a tap or large impedance drop on the wire. Reading the Pulse Mode Graph

  16. First, hit the Save/Recall button on the lower right of the screen. Select which location to save the file- the next open and available location will automatically appear. Press Save/Recall button again and then select the button next to yes. After the Test- Save the Investigation

  17. Make sure you write down either the investigation number or address of the investigation with the saved location number. When time allows, retrieve the above investigation number and enter in your investigation number or address so it coincides with the saved data. Hit the Recall button Recall which location you would like to edit Press the edit message button Use the cursors on the right hand side to select the characters Press the Save/Recall when done to save Save and Name the Investigation

  18. Saving the Investigation • Remember- The whole investigation (data and graphs) will be saved, not just the screen that you happen to be on. • You may view any given mode (Step or Pulse graphs) or lines (L1-N, L2-N, L1-L2) once the investigation is saved but once it is deleted it is gone forever. • You may save the investigation to a computer. Information saved to a computer will appear in a text form on the computer only, but may be uploaded back to the WK for graphical view.

  19. Retrieve Data and Best Print Option • Hit the Recall button • Recall which location you would like to edit • The White Knight was originally designed with a printer port for direct printing. Printer models have changed and this option has become outdated. • We now recommend using a digital camera to take a picture of the screens needed for investigation and print from the camera’s memory card. Digital printing options are readily available, but if you would like suggestions for this method, please let us know.

  20. Help reading the graphs • Sometimes a tap location box will appear on the graph, this is a direct correlation with the text mode which we do not use. Ignore the box! • You may fax us any of the graphs after you print them out and we will help you analyze them. Fax: 503-692-4661
