THE OBJECTIVES • The student will list works of children’s literature and see how reading them today, can prove beneficial to reading other works of literature. • The student will gather in groups and discuss works of children’s literature. The objective here is to recollect on styles, themes, and ideas presented in these texts. • The student will compare and contrast their choice of children’s literature with that of The Great Gatsby. The goal here is for the student to try and pick out similarities or differences that correlate with each other. • The student will present a diagram in which they categorize the traits, formal elements, and other literary devices which tie into what they know about children’s literature. • The student will evaluate the diagram they presented, and construct their own piece of work that ties in those same elements. The goal here is to see what kind of ideas one can present with elements of children’s literature.

  4. A SUMMARY OF INSTRUCTION • This unit is prepared to provide students with a new approach of looking at children’s literature. In addition, this unit aims to demonstrate to students the importance of reading as it applies to their continuing educational career. The student will learn how to research and analyze information gathered about the texts we read, as well as provide new approaches and criticisms about the texts. Working together as a class, we will discover our imagination and open our reading.

  5. STUDENT ASSESMENT • There will be fifteen quizzes over the course of the semester. I will only grade twelve quizzes, which means I will drop the lowest three quiz grades. The quizzes will cover class lecture, vocabulary, and class discussions. There will be two major exams, consisting of vocabulary and the works of literature we focus on. The quizzes will take up 30% of your grade, the two tests will take up %50 percent of your grade, and the other %20 will be our activities and class discussions.

  6. WHAT I’VE LEARNED I have learned that creating a unit of instruction is a bit more difficult when not having good knowledge about your topic. I have also learned that preparation is key. There should always be a time where you say to yourself – “What am I doing right now?” If the answer to that question comes up empty, then it means you can go back to something you’ve already created to make it even better. http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/88967994/
