First, What is Realism? • Renders reality closely and in comprehensive detail. • Character is more important than action and plot; complex ethical choices are often the subject. • Events will usually be plausible. • Diction is natural vernacular. Next, What is Fantasy? • It often takes place, at least in part, in an imaginary world, like Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia. • The world, and sometimes the characters, do not conform to the rules of our physical world. • While not always, Fantasy is typically a form of escapist fiction, where the pleasure of reading is the primary reason for doing do.

Fantasy Magical Realism Magical realism leaves you with the understanding that this world of witches is one that people really live in and the feeling that maybe this view is correct. • A fantasy about southwestern Indian witches allows you to put down the book with perhaps a little shiver but reassurance that what you just read is made up. (Rogers, 2002)

  9. Elements of Magical Realism • Time is not always linear. Past, present and future events are sometimes presented out of order. • Cause and effect are subjective. • The magical/miraculous and the ordinary are treaded in the same way, as a matter of fact.

  10. Magical Realism • As a tool, magical realism can be used to explore the realities of characters or communities who are outside of the objective mainstream of our culture. (Rogers, 2002)
