A short moment in the minds of our classmates, on the topic of magic… Magic: “an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source ” (Merriam Webster).
Fact vs. Fiction….. Or Fact+Fiction…. • Coalescing of fact & fiction • Midnight’s Children&Haroun • “Magical realism is a category of fiction where unbelievable events take place in a realistic setting” (Language of Literature). • Does not include supernatural creatures
Magical Realism Contains: -Realistic elements -Magical Elements -Humor & Exaggeration -Distortions of Time/Identity -Political/Social Commentary
Folktales! -“traditional story: a story or legend that is passed down orally…becomes part of a community's tradition” (Eve Tal). Why do they Exist? -“Folktales are passed from generation to generation…describe cultural aspects…often involve a specific conflict between good and evil” (Learning To Give).Examples:
Elements of Folktales -Characters: simple, stereotyped -Animals: human-like traits, interact with people -Plot: often has the concept of going from poverty to wealth, or having no power to gaining power -Tricksters: mix of good and evil, may help or hinder progress
Folktales’ uniqueness • Folklore: all of the folktales combined • Tall Tales: stories that are meant to be exaggerated and untrustworthy • Myths: a tradition based story, that attempts to explain natural events • Legends: sometimes accepted as historical, unlike folktales
Urban Legends: stories based around possibly real events • Fables: stories meant to teach a lesson • Fairy Tales: mythical stories, often with supernatural entities
