Early Life • Born in 1904 in Catalonia, Spain. • Discovered modern art in 1916 and had his first exhibition of charcoal drawings in 1919. • Studied at the Academia de San Fernando but later expelled. • Experimented with Cubism and Dadaism. • Mother died in 1922 • Met and was influenced by Picasso and Miró. • Became fascinated with the subconscious and joined a Surrealist group in 1929. • Very eccentric and grew odd mustaches.
Surrealism • Started between the World Wars. • Stemmed from Dadaism and began in Europe. • Believed that the reason and logic of the capitalistic society was the cause of the wars. • Began with writers and poets in order to combine the conscious and subconscious. • Heavily influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud.

Later Life • One of the most famous artists of his time • Spent his remaining years back in Catalonia • Senile wife gave him dangerous cocktail of drugs, giving him Parkinson-like symptoms • Wife died in 1982 • Deliberately dehydrated himself • Save d from fire in 1984 • Died of heart failure in 1988
