Salvador Dali 1904-1989
About the Artist • Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech was born in 1904, in Spain. • He was the son of a strict lawyer and a mother who encouraged his artistic nature. • Salvador suffered from some difficult times when he was young.
Dali was born 9 months after his brother, also named Salvador, died. When he was five, his parents took him to his brothers grave and told him he was his brother reincarnated. His mother then died when he was 16. He stated it “was the greatest blow I had experienced in my life. I worshipped her.”
Early Years • Dali attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. • Early recognition of Dali's talent came with his first one-man show, held in Barcelona in 1925. • He became internationally known when three of his paintings, including the Basket of Bread were shown in a International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928.
Surrealism: 1928-1940 • The following year Dali held his first one-man show in Paris. He also joined the Paris Surrealist Group. • Dali soon became a leader of the Surrealist Movement. His painting, Persistence of Memory (1931), is still one of the best known surrealist works.
What is Surrealism? • If you saw a picture of a clock melting, with half of it oozing over the edge of a table, what would you think about the artist? Would you think that he or she lived in a hot place? Would you think that the artist was crazy? Or would you think that you had had a glimpse of someone's dream? A melting clock is something you wouldn't expect to see in real life...or in a painting.
A melting clock is from a painting done by Salvador Dali in a bizarre art style called Surrealism. Surrealist paintings are fun to study. Surrealist paintings often have realistic subjects that are painted in perplexing ways. A different Surrealist painting shows a cheeseburger on a plate, which looks fine...until you notice that the slice of cheese has a face on it.
