Counselors’ Role in IPBS in Bethel • Collect & present CICO data • Make CICO plan adjustments • Report & monitor attendance concerns • Track students with 3 or more ODR’s • Report progress (or lack of) for students on BSP’s • Generate referrals/conduct FBA’s • Collaborate with teachers, team members, & district representatives

What’s in place at your school? Secondary Interventions
Elementary School Counseling Grant 2005-2008 • K-8 school counselors facilitated small groups • Groups were well received by students, staff, and parents • Unrealistic numbers of students were referred to small groups • Attendance data was collected for all students but wasn’t necessarily linked to their academic success
Post-Elementary Counseling Grant • Counselors continue to be an integral part of the IPBS team • Little in place to provide secondary interventions for students in the yellow zone in a systematic manner • As a result, increasing numbers of students land in the red zone without a secondary intervention

Getting to the Heart of it… • Curriculum – what do we use? • Groups – which ones do we offer? • Referral process • How do we link groups to academic success? • Data – how do we show groups are effective? • Continuity across the District
Systematic Secondary Interventions • 5 Defined Skill Groups • Refer students primarily through IPBS structure • Interventions linked to academic success • Effectiveness of skill groups determined by Pre/Post assessments • Continuity across the District
School Success: • Essential skills will be taught & practiced: • Listening • Focusing • Organization • Maintaining a positive attitude Skill Groups

Skill Groups Social Skills: Students will learn skills to: • Manage themselves successfully in the classroom & in other school settings • Help them recognize & express feelings appropriately with peers & adults

Skill Groups Friendship: This group will focus on: • Acknowledging & strengthening friendship qualities • Connecting & communicating with others • Dealing with friendship issues

Skill Groups Healthy Lifestyles: • Designed to help students feel good about who they are • Students will identify the things they do well & have an opportunity to acknowledge their strengths • When applicable, nutrition, physical activity, body image, and hygiene may be skills covered
Skill Groups Families in Transition: For students who have experienced family hardships such as: • Grief/loss • Divorce/separation • Imprisonment • Foster care • Homelessness This group will provide support & encouragement to students experiencing similar life challenges
