Technology: So which is it? • Judging by our practical application and intended purpose, technology can be defined as the physical tools (computers, cameras, etc..), elements, and methods we will use to complete a specialized task.
Say again. • Technology is not just the tools we use to complete the job, it also embodies the production elements we will employ, as well as the methods and techniques such as different camera shots.
Media: So which is it? • Media is the physical manifestation (a brochure), form (dance) or instrument (water colors) used to express thoughts, emotions, meanings, etc…
Think of it this way • Ever heard of a psychic medium?
As in someone who sees ghosts? • In popular culture, a psychic medium can communicate with the spirits of the deceased. Through this medium they can express themselves to the world. • *note* • Do not try to sidetrack me with conversations about the supernatural.
Media: Back on topic • In the case of this class, media will always revolve around the expressing and communicating ideas.
In considering some of the other definitions, the lines that divide media and technology seem to fade. • Technology can be a computer, which is a physical object. • Media could be a DVD or a flash drive, both of which are technological and physical.
Mr. T, my head hurts. • The difference between technology and media is their intentional use. Media’s goal is to always communicate.
Food for thought • How would you define YouTube?
Answer • YouTube is a user created technology. The videos on YouTube are media
More Food For Thought • Since we have defined what media is, what is multimedia?
Going back to Webster • Returning to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. • using, involving, or encompassing several media <a approach to learning> • Example: • a exhibit of photographs, films, and music
So what about production? • It pretty much goes without saying that production is the creation of products. • In the case of this class, the product will be multimedia. • You will make videos • You will make podcasts • You will blog • You will express.
What is expected of you • Essentially, in this class, you will use the tools at your disposal to create multimedia products. Remember, expression is the key.
Your Teacher • My part of this class will be to provide you with the technology (tools techniques, etc…) to express yourself.
Work Citied • The following article provides a wonderful description of technology and media. I relied heavily on Ms. Puffenberger’s insight in defining these two terms • Puffenberger, Amy.
