I am monitoring more than 1,000 interfaces on a dual processor Compaq machine. It has a scsi drive and I run multiple config files at the same time. These are scaled so that they finish in less than 5 minutes each. They are also staggered by using a sleep command to start one once a second and then wait to 5 minutes - the number of starts (ie 300-40 starts). This seems to work fine with me. It does need a bit of memory for all the instances of MRTG, Perl and Rateup, but it works just fine.
