Guidelines for Senior Capstone Project Implementation in Virginia Schools

Develop and submit guidelines for local school boards to implement senior capstone projects, portfolios, assessments, or experiments to prepare students for college and career readiness. Reviewing current practices in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and California to enhance graduation requirements. Stakeholder meetings and next steps planned for effective implementation.

  2. Legislation To develop and submit guidelines for local school boards to develop and implement a senior capstone.  To include: • Project; • Portfolio; • Performance-based Assessment; or • Structured Experiment (aka. Individual Science Research Project)

  3. Current Virginia Practice In 2011, BOE approves two Capstone Courses • Mathematics Capstone Course • English Capstone Course Courses focus more on content than overall demonstration of competencies learned throughout high school that prepare to be college and career ready.

  4. State Practices • Georgia and North Carolina – graduation requirement • California – local option • Washington – past graduation requirement eliminated in 2015

  5. Stakeholder Meeting • August 14, 2019 • Representation from various stakeholder groups invited • School Divisions • VDOE staff • Institutions of Higher Education • Educational Partner Organization

  6. Next Steps • September 25, 2019 • Stakeholders to include • LEA • IHE • Educational groups • Business/Industry
