Legislation To develop and submit guidelines for local school boards to develop and implement a senior capstone. To include: • Project; • Portfolio; • Performance-based Assessment; or • Structured Experiment (aka. Individual Science Research Project)
Current Virginia Practice In 2011, BOE approves two Capstone Courses • Mathematics Capstone Course • English Capstone Course Courses focus more on content than overall demonstration of competencies learned throughout high school that prepare to be college and career ready.
State Practices • Georgia and North Carolina – graduation requirement • California – local option • Washington – past graduation requirement eliminated in 2015
