Considering the first 3 stages of faith… on which stage does your church spend the majority of its time and programming today?
Stage FourThe Journey Inward Faith at this Stage is… Rediscovering God Characteristics at this Stage include… • Crisis; loss of certainties • Apparent loss of faith; not clear or sure of beliefs • Answers don’t come as clearly as questions do • Seeking direction, not answers
Stage FourThe Journey Inward Role of Classes/Groups/Activity • Allow the raising of questions, no ready answers, holistic search for faith and life • Inward vs. outward focus, time for God and self • Reflection opportunities, listening, to deepen one’s journey Key questions to ask people • What God questions are you asking? Has your image of God changed? • Has the faith you relied on fallen apart? When? How? Why? • What is different about the way you perceive God? Christ?
The Wall: The Place of Inner ChoicesBetween Stages 4 & 5 Faith at this stage is… Our will facing God’s will and choosing whether or not to surrender Characteristics at this stage include… • Feeling like we’re in the muck • Uncovering our deepest fears • The “dark night of the soul” • Time to face my fears about God; time to heal
The Wall: The Place of Inner ChoicesBetween Stages 4 & 5 Role of Classes/Groups/Activity • Help face deepest fears, with discernment guides/spiritual coaches • Address questions of God, past wounds, unhealed experiences, unresolved grief, etc. • Reflection opportunities to focus on deeper issues; rituals for healing Key questions to ask people • What are you holding on to? What would you have to give up to move forward into more intimacy with God/ • Do you sometimes feel that God ha abandoned you? • How are you experiencing God in the middle of this experience? Is grace visible?
Stage Five:The Journey Inward Faith at this Stage is… Surrendering to our call by God for others Characteristics of this Stage include… • Sense of God’s purpose or calling • Operating from a deep calm or stillness • Concern & focus on others’ best interests, loving love • Will live as God is calling me to live
Stage Five:The Journey Inward Role of Classes/Groups/Activity • Ongoing disciplines, prayer, forgiveness, and ministry in everyday life • Clarity about calling and ongoing spiritual direction • Opportunities to support and coach others, and lead spiritual formation activities Key questions to ask people • What is your deep longing? • How do you glimpse God’s purpose, call, and ministry in your life? • How are you experiencing the shift from a vertical life (primarily you and God) to a horizontal life (primarily you, with God, moving out to others)?
Stage Six:The Life of Love Faith at this Stage is… Reflecting God Characteristics of this Stage include… • Live in the Way of Jesus • Wisdom and Compassion • Detachment from things and stress • Life roles and positions are unimportant • Work is love is ministry is healing is prayer
Stage Six:The Life of Love Role of Classes/Groups/Activity • Offer wisdom gifts, stories, teaching to others on journey • Offer themselves as models of intimacy with God, compassion for others, lives of faith Key questions to ask people • How are you detached (not affected adversely or drawn into addictive desires) from self, others, and the world and simultaneously attached (ever desiring to be more intimate, even to die to gain union) to God? • How is God everything for you?
Stage Six:The Life of Love Role of the Church • Community of love • All work and life is ministry • Live life of Jesus daily • Deep healing - psychologically and spiritually
