  4. Prevention • Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury

  5. Health Education • Obtaining accurate health information

  6. Health literacy • Critical thinker and problem solver • Responsible, productive citizen • Self-directed learner • Effective communicator

  7. Physical Health • Your body and how well it functions • Energy for daily activities • Energy for challengesand stresses • Resist Disease • Accomplished through sleep, good nutrition, water and exercise

  8. Mental/Emotional Health • Feelings about yourself, able to meet the demands of daily life, and the ability to process information. • Enjoy challenges • Accept responsibility for actions • Stand up for beliefs and values • Able to deal with frustrations

  9. Social Health • How well you get along with others • Ability to make and keep friends • Communication skills • Respect for yourself and others

  10. Heredity • Traits that are biologically passed onto you from your parents

  11. Environment • The sum of your surroundings • Physical environment, family, friends, culture

  12. Attitude • The way you view situations affects choices you make • Positive people tend to have better health

  13. Behavior • Actions YOU choose

  14. Media • Various methods of communicating information, radio, TV, film, newspaper, magazines, books, and the internet • Media influences opinions – go to reliable sources. THINK!!

  15. Technology • Advances have had a great impact on the world’s health. Medical screening, treatment, and action plans to keep the environment cleaner

  16. Risk Behaviors • Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others

  17. CUMULATIVE RISKS • Related risks that increase in intensity with each added risk.

  18. Cumulative Risk (cont.) • Cumulative risks also result from a combination of risk factors. • Example • Drinking and driving • Speeding, wet roads, no helmet

  19. LIFE TRIANGLE 35-40 After age 35-40, body functions begin to decline. How I treat my body up to age 35 will determine how quickly or slowly my functions will decrease. Birth Death

  20. Life Triangle cont. • Making good choices now will slow the aging process • Example…70% of diseases are caused by dietary choices

  21. Abstinence • Avoiding harmful behaviors

  22. Abstaining from Risk Behaviors • NO RISK NO FUN ????? • Know the difference between lowering risk and no Risk • Weigh out the pro’s and con’s • Talk with a friend/parent/reliable person • Make a Pro-Active Decision

  23. There are plenty of YES Actions • Exercise • Study • Trips • Religion • Relationships • Grow physically, mentally, and spiritually • Say Yes to those things that make you a better person
