  2. What are the needs of newly arrived EAL pupils? • To be made welcome • To feel safe and secure • To find their way without getting lost • To have someone to turn to • To make friends • To learn English • To follow the National Curriculum

Suggestions for the first early days in school • Pupils can spend useful time just listening, getting accustomed to the sounds of English, gradually picking up new words • CIRCLE staff talk to tutor group • Gradual introduction to timetable • ICT English learning programmes • Workbooks for lessons when they can’t access curriculum • Bilingual notebook

How can the school meet the needs of newly arrived pupils? • School induction process for new pupils • Placing pupils in appropriate year, class, set • Peer support, “Study Buddy Scheme” • Sixth form, volunteer, LSW support, mentoring • English tuition • Inclusion in mainstream lessons (teaching strategies, differentiated work)

Recognizing the additional needs of EAL pupils Pupils may have additional needs because: refugees and pupils seeking asylum/unaccompanied children cultural and/or religious differences differences in educational systems differences in script of first language lack of school experience non-literate in first language SEN as well as EAL emotional & social needs

Meeting the additional needs of EAL pupils • refugee information pack, resources & INSET from CIRCLE • community contacts • school uniform - girls may need to wear headscarves, long- sleeved shirts, appropriate PE/swimming kit • pupils may need prayer facilities for Ramadan, etc • maintaining bilingualism, celebrating festivals & cultural diversity, bilingual books • strategies for inclusion of non-literate pupils • access and training in ICT

What about exams? • additional GCSEs in own first language/s • rules for SATs disapplication, extra time, etc • Pitmans ESOL exams • ICT qualifications (CLAIT) • alternative exams for late arrivals/ pupils with little previous schooling (AEB Achievement in literacy/ numeracy, Welsh Board English exams) • work experience • CIRCLE achievements booklet
