  3. Graduation Date Begin with the end in mind. JUNE 7, 2013

  4. Graduation Info Tickets: • Each senior will be given 7 tickets to the graduation ceremony • Seniors may request up to 2 extra tickets. These requests will only be accepted online. Only 1 request per senior will be accepted. Cap/Gown – Announcements • Ordering information will be given to seniors late January / early February • Seniors may borrow a cap/gown from a previous graduate (girls – silver gown / boys – green gown). If a senior borrows a gown, you will need to purchase a 2013 tassel (approx. $7.00). • Cost of cap/gown is approximately $34.

  5. Guys Boys-Long dress pants dark (preferably black) No jeans, corduroys, etc. Dark shoes and socks no sandals, sneakers, or work boots White shirt and dark tie. Girls Girls-Appropriate dress no longer than your graduation gown. White or Silver dress shoes or sandals, no sneakers or other (play) shoes, and no boots Dress Code For Graduation

  6. Senior PageTHS Websiteths.sites.fcps.org • Visit the senior page of the THS website frequently for important graduation information • Extra Tickets requests and Handicapped Seating Requests will only be accepted online. The link will be available at the start of 2nd semester.

  7. Graduation Practices • All Practices are MANDATORY • Practices will be held on June 4th, June 5th, and June 6th • 8:00 am – 12 noon in the gymnasium • Seniors are expected to be ON TIME for all practices. Seniors are also expected to stay for the entire practice. • If seniors are late to practice, they will be given a detention for the amount of time they are late PLUS 30 minutes (example – if you are 2 minutes late, they will serve 32 minutes of detention that same day after practice)

Graduation Requirements • 25 Credits • 75 Hours of Service Learning • 1602 or higher combined score on HSA (for 4 assessments) Algebra, English, Government & Biology • 1208 or higher combined score (for 3 assessments) Algebra, English & Biology • Core curriculum goals met 4 English, 3 Social Studies, 3 Science, 4 Math, 1 Fine Art, 1 Technology, Health/Fitness and, 2 World Languages or 2 Adv. Tech or 4 Career & Tech Program Completers

  10. Student Service Learning • All students must earn 75 hours of community service before they graduate. • FCPS has many of these hours infused into the essential curriculum. • Students who wish to earn meritorious service may turn in their hours to Ms. Mummert for extra recognition.

  11. Grade Point Averages Grade Non-Weight Weighted • A (90-100%) 4 points 5.00 points • B (80-89%) 3 points 3.75 points • C (70-79%) 2 points 2.50 points • D (60-69%) 1 point 1.25 points • F (0-59%) 0 points 0.00 points

  12. Tiered Honors Exemplary Achievement according to the weighted grade point average. Honor cords awarded at graduation. Honors 3.50-3.74 High Honors 3.75-3.99 Highest Honors 4.0 or greater

  13. State Scholars • Students who have achieved a 2.5 unweighted grade point average and have completed all core requirements including Algebra 2 and 2 credits of the same world language will be designated as MARYLAND SCHOLARS.

  14. College Application Process • Complete college application. • Enclose an essay or personal statement. • Complete Transcript Request Form and attach Secondary School Report for counselor to complete. Check that you do waive your right to confidentiality. • Make sure Transcript Release form, Brag Sheets and Resume have been turned in to Guidance. Counselors will not complete requests without brag sheets and resumes. • Ask teachers for recommendation letters. Give at least two weeks notice. Ask personally and in private. Be specific about your request. • Request that College Board and ACT send scores to colleges of your choice.

Common Application • Please complete the Applicant Portion of the Common Application School Report form. • Please an “X” by Yes, I do waive my right to access…..( this allows us to send in the information confidentially) • Student signature is required as well. • Counselors will complete the rest of the form and will be able to use it for any colleges that accept the Common Application.

  16. Application Process (cont’d) Counselor will complete secondary school report and each student will receive an envelope from guidance with the following included: 1. Secondary School Report (Common Application or individual college forms) 2. Counselor Letter of Recommendation 3. Official transcript 4. Tuscarora High School Profile ** It will be the student’s responsibility to mail these envelopes. Pay close attention to deadlines. They must arrive at the college admission office on the deadline date….not be postmarked on that date.**

  17. Note of Thanks!! Please take a few minutes to write a thank you note to a teacher, employer, coach or other person who took their time to write a letter of recommendation for you. If you have had an interview with college admissions or financial aid, a note is also an appropriate follow up.

  18. College Essay • Don’t over think it. Be Yourself !! • Keep it short..a few paragraphs is perfect. • Make it interesting and unique. Let you personality shine through. • You must proofread and possibly have another adult proof it as well. • It should not be a repeat of your resume. • Be honest. • Keep it focused. Don’t ramble.

College Visits • College visits should be arranged in advance through the college admissions office. • Complete the THS form to request approval for an excused absence in advance when going on a college visit. • College websites often advertise open houses. • Make appointments in advance for department chairs, financial aid officers and possibly the athletic department or coaching staff. • It is not necessary for you to have made a site visit before you apply to a college but you should definitely visit before you make a decision about whether to attend.

College Night 2012October 3rd Frederick Community College Fieldhouse 6:30p.m -8:30p.m. Colleges, universities and other post secondary institutions will be there to answer questions, provide meaningful insights to their programs and career opportunities. They usually have 200-300 representatives there to assist you.

  26. Waivers For students who already receive meal assistance at school, we can provide waivers for college applications & college testing. If there are other financial constraints, please see your school counselor privately.
